Recently we had a discussion about formal examinations and continuous evaluation as two means to assess students. There were mixed opinions, but finally the conclusion was that continous evaluation is a far better option.

First of all, formal examinations are artificial in nature. They dont reflect a real world situation that the student might encounter in the future. Formal examinations are conducted just for the sake of conducting examinations. Examinations dont add any value to an individual.

The result of a formal examination is a measure of what the student was able to put down onto the paper, and that too from the perspective of a limited number of questions. It never reflects his overall understanding and ability to learn.

When the examination gains more importace than the subject, instituions like the brilliant, (both from palai and chennai) gets attention. They teach tips and tricks. They give importance to the exam procedure and ways to crack it. The subject is lost in attempts to score marks. The preperations for entrance exams is a total waste of productive time and energy. They might get you into some institution of your choice, but it is not adding any value to the subject you learn.

During my engineering days, all our time was wasted in class rooms sleeping or some other entertainment activity like movies or sports. I spend most of my time infront of a computer either coding or chatting with friends.

Studies starts only a week before the examinaiton and would hit the peak on the day before the exam. All that we used to do is learn the question patterns, and study whatever is necessary to get the minimum pass mark. You cant call them studies. Its just some reading done to be able to write something on the answer sheet.

The only part where some justice is being done to the student is the practical exams. There also tips and tricks works, but not beyond an extent. Your examiner can find out how much of knowledge you have in matter of minutes.

We need to have more projects and assignments in the education system here, where the true potential of the student can be assessed. But this requires dedicated teachers who are ready to spend time with the students. The teacher should be with the student gauging the progress of the work, and helping him whenever necessary.Similar Posts:
