Bug Labs logo

Bug is a collection of easy to use open source hardware modules. The developer can connect together these devices physically and then build programs for various applications.

The bug is based on a fully programmable linux computer with 128MB ram, wifi, USB, ethernet, LCD screen and some control buttons.

To create your dream device you can add various bug modules to the bug base. Some of the bug modules are

  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Accelerometer
  • Touchscreen
  • QWERTY Keyboard
  • Audio

Buglabs also provides you with a development environment called BMI (Bug Module Interface).

The company will soon release Bugnet which will help developers to share their work and connect with others and collaborate.

Open source hardware

Open source logo

This is the recent buzz among electronics enthusiasts. The gap between electronics and computer science is becoming thin and the significance of open source hardware is increasing.

Like in software, the complete details needed for understanding, rebuilding and enhancing the project is made available. Details usually include idea document, schematics, board design, component specifications and microcontroller code if any. If some mechanical parts are involved CAD drawings are also provided.

There are many projects available on the internet from which we can learn.  These are some of the famous projects

  • Arduino (embedded development platform)
  • Simputer (handheld computer)
  • Openbook ( laptop)
  • Oscar (Open source Car)

The world is becoming more and more open and information is readily available about almost everything on your finger tips. To me 24 hours a day is not enough.
