The Chines are coming…

I am into management of Computer business. The electronics market is the most volatile market after the currency market. The way thing’s are going now - I can see the electronics business going out of the hand’s of wholesalers and retailers in the next ten years. We are in a era where the Internet is the new world. As more and more people get access to internet, more and more services will be moved out of the retail shelves and into web pages.

Since we are into the wholesale side of business - I can already feel the pinch of the Chines taking over some of our market. The concept of Factory - Distributor (Wholesaler) - Retailer - End User is dying. The axe has already fallen on the distributor. This has happen because of the consolidation in the retail market and the growth of retail chains like Wall-mart. Due to their volumes they now dictate what brands and what prices will go on their shelves. But this is short lived as in the next 10 years I can see the full potential of the Internet being unleashed.

The Factories will soon have websites, from which the End User can directly buy. With more and more thing’s becoming Disposable - there will be no question of Service and Support (We are already living in an era where it is considered to be more economical to use a spoon once and then thrown away - only to be picked up by recyclers and smelted back into a spoon than to wash it and re use it). You just have to log into their website and pick up the items you want and pay using one of the internet payment services (Paypal…) or even your credit card. Depending on what and where you are ordering People like DHL and other Courier Service will deliver it to you within four hours or within a week.

The first one’s to be hit will be the electronic industry, but soon you will see all the all the other industries following suit. So if you are investing into the future it will be a better Idea to invest into one of these factories or into very high end solution providers - The likes of IBM or Mobme (Kenney that is for you :) )

I would appreciate if you guy’s could leave your comment’s just below. All kinds of comments are welcome…

Going to buy a Hard Drive or a digital camera? Wait

Prices will be dropping soon Hard Drives, Digital Cameras and LCD Screens. On the hard drives the 80GB hard drives will be replaced by 160GB (around Rs. 2400). Watch out for the drop in digital cameras - they are substantial. 6MP cameras should be around Rs. 5000. Again on the LCD’s 17″ screen’s will be replaced by 19″ wide screen (Rs. 9000). Laser Printers have also become very cheep lately. You should be able to get an entry level Laser Printer for around Rs. 4000.

The way prices are dropping on computer - the Gov should consider feeding people computers instead of food grains…

From Single Core to Quad Core & Multicore…

 multicore logo

The speed with which the technology has changed with regards to the number of cores inside the processor has been amazing. But is all those cores really worth it? For example a Pentium Dual Core processor has two cores of equal speed working at 1.6GHz which gives you a total speed of 3.2GHz. But will your machine actually use that kind of processing power? Throughout the life time of a processor 95% of these processors never reach 100% Processing Power. Most of the processing power on a desktop machine is taken up by background applications like your operating system, your GUI, the antivirus and in most cases Viruses. And to top it all off these multi-core processors are only supported by very few applications.

Then how do you go about purchasing a new computer?Well the first thing to think about when you are purchasing the computer is your requirement:

Just home use - typing out documents, browsing Internet, Playing a few games and watching movies once in a while - you should go for a AMD Sempron Processor (Celeron only is Sempron is not available)

All the above + Ripping Movies & Music and Playing high end Games, playing around with Corel Draw and Photoshop - you should go for a Pentium Dual Core or an Athlon X2 Processor.

Working with 3D graphics and Autocad? well Core 2 Duo is the answer to your query
