I am not talking about the IITs, I am talking about the normal engineering colleges in every state. The ones who are not blessed with tons of funding and very good staff, but blessed with many talented (misplaced) students.
I have seen many students, who has no direction, I myself had the same problem in college. I have (wasted/learned from) a lot of time running after every small technology that caught my interest. There was noone to give direction.
You dont need to teach them, you dont need to make them attend a 100 hr training session. You dont need to spend cash on them. All you need to do is to tell them whats cool now and give them something to pursue. The rest they will manage.
Dhaneesh, a student from a an engineering college in Trivandrum also had the same direction problem. He can code really well. But he didnt know what to do with his skills. I met him two days before Android SDK was released. I talked to him about the idea of making a cool app in android platform, and he is now learning the platform and wants to start a company developing applications on the Android platform.
May be this what technology evangelisation is all about. Showing them the opportunity and letting them rise to it.
Here in India there is a huge population to be converted. What do you need for that ? Someone to talk to them about it. Someone to show them the cool things they can do with their skills. We need evangelists.
Many companies have evangelists. But they is no common platform for technology evangelisation. With a combined effort from all the companies we can really convert the students, no matter what the technology is.

Evangelists. I hate them, cos I had only seen Christian Evangelists who shout and sing and do all sorts of silly stuff in the name of God. Its only been 2 years since I found out that there are other kinds of evangelists also. The first one I met was Kiran Patel. She was a technology evangelist for SUN.
Ever since I started blogging, I wanted to become a blogging evangelist. I have inspired many to start blogs. I took 3 seminars for college students to start blogs. Even my mom started blogging. www.marializa.com
I really dont know why I want everyone to be blogging. But to me blogging is really a pleasure, it helps me organize myself, improve my communication skills and communicate with the world. Its really enjoyable to wake up every morning and check the traffic stats for your blog and to see its climbing.
Now, Like one of slides in the presentation that I give college students, every blogger has an excuse for blogging. If you start blogging you also will find a reason to blog.
Now I am working on a plan to make blogging really popular among college students and it needs some funding. So I am looking for some sponsors who is interested to reach the youth through a blogging platform that I plan to create. Any one interested ???

Computer science and electronics engineering, the modern branches of engineering education are under the control of the older branches like mechanical and civil. In most of the colleges the most under developed branches are these new branches. Some reasons for this are
- Most senior staff are from older branches
- Most principals are from older branches
- Higher number of women staff in newer branches
- More male students in older branches
All of these factors translate to the fact that the control of the college and decision making power lies with these fellows. So at the college level our new branches are helpless.
Even at the university, and AICTE level also this creates problems. The syllabus is controlled by the old generation branches and the new computer science students are forced to learn a lot of useless stuff. Some examples that I had to learn
- Civil Engineering
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Machine Technology
- Engineering graphics (practicals)
- Grinding, cutting, plumbing (lab)
- Mechanical engineering
There are many more examples. These fellows have real strange arguments to include this in the syllabus. “And engineer should know about everything”…. like hell.
A student is not properly introduced to computer science. The syllabus needs a massive change. All these good for nothing subjects should be removed and that time should be alloted to basic stuff like learning to use different operating systems, learning about the internet and different ways to use it.
The bottom line is that 70% of a computer science students time is wasted. We need to change that and the change should start from awareness.
Please check the education category for more stuff.
