Though it is God’s Own Country, this even had no features of the usually morbid and never-on-time events that his land is famous for…

I got here on time, and surprisingly enough, the event started on time as well..

Anyhow, first there was an introductory session, when everybody came and introduced themselves.. And I realised..

“OH GOOD GOD, I’m the ONLY non-techie here!!”

But, i continued to sit here itself..

Next was a presentation on startups by this spectacled guy.. Anyhow, dint catch his name.. But, this is what he looks like from behind..

Then it was Mr. Shalvin’s turn to amaze… I’m like completely lost right now.. Are these people talking English or what?? Asp.net? What is that? Sounds like a kinky, low budget Hollywood action movie…

Anyhow, this is what that looked like..

When we planned for the first BarCamp in Kerala we faced a lot of trouble. We faced problems with the BarCamp name and the concept of an informal meeting.

In Kerala, anything that has got a BAR in its name immediately raises some eye brows. Think about us, calling up a college princi and asking him to send his students for a BAR….Camp !!!!!

Some were against the concept of an informal meeting and to my surprise I found out that every meeting that happens in our college, schools, and other organizations have strict written protocols. There are specific instructions as to who should preside over the meeting, who should be the chief guest, who should give the welcome speech etc.

For the first two BarCamps, a lot of effort had to be put in. Educating the community about BarCamps, finding a venue for the event, finding the right community and informing them all, it was a great team effort. For BarCamp 1, UST gave use a hall in Technopark, thanks to Renjith Ramachadran and for BarCamp 2 was hosted by CUSAT, thanks to Althaf and Anurag.

Then came the blogcamp, and this time it was really big with Kerala Tourism sponsoring a House Boat. The event got a lot of media attention and helped spread the concept of unconferences. Every reporter who called us, first wanted to know what an unconference is.

And this was the tipping point for BarCamp Culture in Kerala. When we decided to organize BarCamp Kerala 3, we got requests from a few institutions to conduct it in their campus. Barcamp 3 is in CUSAT and we already have IIMK ready to host BarCamp 4 in their Campus.

And the ultimate aim is to have local BarCamps, BarCamp Kottayam, BarCamp Kannur, BarCamp Alappuzha etc happening and local colleges hosting the event. Then we can say Gods own country is finally BarCamp Certified !!!Similar Posts:

Innovation need not be ground breaking

iCamp (23 February, Bangalore): Innovation Camp (iCamp) was held on Saturday in Bangalore. More than 80 people attended the day-long event, which was hosted by MindTree Consulting Ltd. The idea of the camp was to share individual experiences and opinions about innovation in different contexts in the unstructured way that a BarCamp permits.

The talks ranged from the basic “What is innovation?” to ones connecting humanitarianism and spirituality to innovation. A session on innovation in MBA education sparked off discussions on how this idea can be scaled to introduce innovation at all levels of education. While many of the subjects revolved around IT, a number of examples were drawn from non-IT fields as well—not just technology products, but say, traffic jams in Bangalore, and how innovation is needed to address the problem.

Another topic was whether one can be taught to innovate, or a framework be developed in which every person can innovate. Views differed, but everyone agreed that to commercialize innovations, structured processes help. Innovation need not be groundbreaking or disruptive, even finding a shorter route to the office can be called an innovation.

One speaker even innovated with his talk on “Innovative ideas to manage relationships”. He did not have any ideas on the subject, but made use of the collective intelligence of the audience and their experiences to come up with theories.

The day concluded with Knowledge Café, a round table discussion over coffee, jalebis and samosas on “Does process help or hurt innovation?” A majority of the campers felt that process is required, but it should be without restrictions.
