This means that anyone can customize the android platform and then keep it proprietary.  There is no commitment that the source needs to be published. The open source community already raised their concerns to this approach.

I believe this is to protect the monetary investment companies make to build new technology into the platform. After all there is no free lunch.

But a competing platform, Openmoko is completely open and free to use. Their argument is that, they give the openmoko for free, so everyone who improves upon it also should give it free the community.

What ever the case may be, android is helping the developer community learn and experiment. Also it is spreading linux as a popular operating system for mobile phones. Windows mobile really sucks, and symbian too.Similar Posts:

Google announced the Open Handset Alliance and the Android.

Together they have developed Android™, the first complete, open, and free mobile platform.

Instead of creating an entire phone, they created an open Operating System which every phone manufacturer can use. Developers can create applications without any restrictions.

Platform always beats an application.

Google applied the same principle again. Instead of creating a phone, they created an OS that would become a platform for thousands of developers and hundreds of phone manufacturers.
