Linux

Guest Post :- Jyothi M John (Botswana)

Linux is becoming quite popular now a days. A derivative of Unix - Linux is one of the most stable operating systems available and it all comes free. The most popular distribution of Linux is the Red Hat (Now the free version is called Fedora). The biggest draw back that Linux used to have was that it was not user friendly, but with the advent of other distributions like Ubuntu and Mandriva the Linux Desktop has become better than the windows desktop.

We are using Fedora Core 3 on our office server, and it comfortably manages all our DHCP, DNS, File Sharing (Samba) , Domain Controller (Ldap), Printer Sharing (), Internet Proxy (SQUID). And to top all this off - we are running two virtual machines inside the installation - one is a windows 2000 installation that is controlling our Point of Sale Software and the other is an Windows XP installation managing the Anti-virus in our network.

Extremely Stable - It has been up and working on a machine with Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT Processor with 2 GB DDR Memory, for a period of 2 and a half years my down time has been 1 day.

Installing Network Printers with CUPS

It is now very easy to get common printers to work as network printers using . Thanks to www.linuxprinting.org and technology giants like HP releasing drivers for Linux. For your printer to work with Linux you have to get the following things:

1. CUPS - (www..org)

2. Foomatic filters - (http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/Foomatic)

3. Ghostscript - ( http://www.ghostscript.com/awki)

4. LSB (LINUX STANDARD BASE) Package - (http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/LSB)

(Please download the right package depending on your Hardware and distribution)

Most of the new releases of all the major distributions of Linux are LSB complaint.

Once you have all these packages installed, get the cups service up. Use the GUI or the command line to add the printer to CUPS.If your printer is not listed on CUPS, download the right drivers (PPD file) from the web. For some brands which have not released the drivers, you might be able to find open drivers, which might not give you the full functionality of the printer. Once you have added the printer on to CUPS, try and print a test page. If it comes all right you have your printer up and running on . Now you can use Samba to share the printer with other windows clients that you may be using in your network.

FreeNas - My Own Simple Network Storage

FreeNas Logo

I have a lot of big files on my laptop, and my laptop has only 40GB hard disk. Most of the times I download videos from youtube and videos. All these are filling up my hard disk. Also I want to share these videos with everyone in my team, cos most of the videos are tech videos.  I also have with me tons of tutorial files written on to DVDs and Cds.

So to share the files with everyone I decided to buy a network harddisk. But the costs are a bit high for 1000 GB device (around 20K). Why would I buy a 1000 GB network storage for 20K when I can buy two 500 GB HDDs for 5K each, and then setup them in one of my old PCs.

And the search for a good software led me to FreeNas.   is a free NAS (Network-Attached Storage) server, supporting: CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, AFP, RSYNC, iSCSI protocols, S.M.A.R.T., local user authentication, Software RAID (0,1,5) with a Full WEB configuration interface. takes less than 32MB once installed on Compact Flash, hard drive or USB key.

Ill be soon setting up and giving it a try. Will post the details after doing so.

Open Handset Alliance - Google plays smart again

We were all expecting a cute looking Gphone from google, which would be cheap and fully loaded with useful software, and would sell hot in the market. With the kind of reach they have to the public, they could have capture the majority market share in one year. But proved to be smarter than we thought.

Google announced the Open Handset Alliance and the .

The Open Handset Alliance™, a group of more than 30 technology and mobile companies who have come together to accelerate innovation in mobile and offer consumers a richer, less expensive, and better mobile experience. Together they have developed ™, the first complete, open, and free mobile platform.

Instead of creating an entire phone, they created an open Operating System which every phone manufacturer can use. Developers can create applications without any restrictions.

Platform always beats an application.

Google applied the same principle again. Instead of creating a phone, they created an OS that would become a platform for thousands of developers and hundreds of phone manufacturers.

The days of symbian, and windows mobile seems to be numbered.

Stream Videos With VLC Player

VLC player Logo

A few days back my friend Sarath was approached by a few medical college students. They all are in the final year and their convocation ceremony is coming up. They wanted us to help them to stream their convocation ceremony to their parents abroad.

We are not streaming experts, but we couldnt turn down their request, after all its a prestige issue. So we started searching for streaming video solutions and we stumbled upon VLC player.

We all were using player to watch videos, its a really good player since it can play corrupted videos without crashing the system. Also you can view finished torrent videos as the download is happening.

The VLC player has got a built in video streaming server. It can stream many formats and can accept video from almost any source. We tested the streaming functionality on our local wifi with a DVD quality stream. It worked perfectly fine.

Now we are waiting for a video camera and a capture card so that we can test the real problem scenario. If that also works fine, we will be streaming the convocation function of Trivandrum medical college - LIVE.
