P2p for Stand Alone Devices

P2p file sharing started a revolution in the way how we accessed multimedia content on our PC through internet. It was a truly disruptive technology and it changed the business models of the media industry.

P2p file downloading has become a very common activity. I look for files on a network rather than searching in . downloads are faster than normal downloads. Also I like to watch the connection stats, peers  etc, it gives me a really nice feeling.

The newest thing in the scene is p2p streaming. Joost, a 2 streaming product is getting a lot of attention. Finally its looks like we have found a solution for the bandwidth crisis when we attempt true video on demand.  Soon I will be able to watch live video on my laptop.

Now what is future going to look like for ?

P2p has conquered the internet and the PC. Now it will come to our living rooms. The next thing will be a p2p set top box. Live streaming and video on demand powered using p2p technology over an IP network. IP TV will need technology to deliver content in reasonable time delays.

P2p technology will work better with TV when compared to downloading because the number of people viewing the same channel in a locality will be many times higher than the number of people downloading the same file. So for a channel there will be an enormous number of seeds.

Companies making set top boxes and IP TVs should start looking into this technology cos this is your future.

P2p trackers are now capable to tracking usage data and then rating users. Leechers will be banned, seeders gets rewarded automatically, users who maintain higher ratios can download more files.

There are many communities that have evolved around p2p file sharing.  combined with social networking is taking shape now. Allpeers, a firefox plugin is the best example.

P2P not an “Underground” Technology Anymore

p2p logo

Peer to peer file sharing was considered and illegal technology cos of its wide spread use to distribute files with copyright without getting caught. Napster, Elitetorrents, bittorrent etc are some of the examples. Many illegal companies were closed after long legal battles.

Inspite of all these problems the community adopted the technology because of its use and efficiency.  Now the technology has become stable and secure and more and more companies are looking forward to the benefits of technology.

Joost is a system for distributing TV shows via the internet using technology. The company already signed agreements with some of the major production houses in the US for distributing TV content.

PeerCast allows streaming of radio and TV content. Using this technology anyone can become a broadcaster.

Bittorrent is the most popular keyword in the p2p industry. Its a protocol for file sharing as well as a company. The company has now agreements with major studios to sell their content. They have evolved into a paid site from where the users can download content via technology by paying a small amount.
