Shafi’s Chocolate tells the story of a boy, who comes to study in a women’s college. Prithviraj plays the lead Shyam Balagopal and Roma is the heroine Ann mathew. The movie starts with the PTA meeting happening in the St.Mary’s women’s college (Secret Heart College, Thevara) to make it a mixed one. Due to the parents’ offence, they turns down the decision but allots one boy as per the rule for the PG course. The main gang of Roma, Samvritha and Ramya are against the arrival of a boy where the opposite gang welcomes it. He arrives in and there starts the feast of a complete romantic comedy entertainer.
Prithviraj excels as Shyam, and the first day class room scene is enough to prove his comedy talents. After Classmates, Keralites get the chance to see some nice romance on the screen. Prithviraj and Roma carries good on-screen chemistry and it is handled with care. Among the crew, the new writers Sachi and Sethu deserves the first applause for the gripping script. But the second half could have been made even better (some scenes are predictable and fight scene could have been avoided). The climax scene is innovative and it suits the film’s mood. Salim Kumar also contributes to the comedy part and Jayasurya is good in the supporting role.
With Chocolate, Shafi proves that he can also make visually appealing movie if there is a good script with him. The costume designer and the art director deserves a special mention for making the film really colourful. Alex Paul’s music is a let down, but the romantic melody “Ishtamalle…” is really hummable and is shot well. The film is sure to get many repeated viewers and is going to become the megahit of the year.
Can give 7/10.

Nivedyam tells the love story of two teenagers in the atmosphere of a temple. Mohana Krishnan(Vinu Mohan) comes for studying music to a famous illam, and gets apointed as “keezh shanthi” in the family temple of the illam. There are many girls studying dance and the arrival of a young guy creates a lot of funny moments among them.
Lohithadas has succeeded in creating a vibrant atmosphere for the movie in the first half, and it turns head over heals in the second half. The story turns into the same way of Kasthuriman and everything happens as expected. The heroine’s family, steriotypic villain, unavoidable similar climax, all reminds us nothing but only Kasthuriman.
New actress Bhama gives an above average performance, but her character has all the shades of Shivani in Soothradharan. Vinu mohan is energetic but Lohi couldn’t correct his overacting situations. It was refreshing to see the new comers’ on screen chemistry, and romantic scenes in the temple are good. Songs are also good. Heroine’s attachment to Lord Krishna could have been avoided, since Hero’s character also follows solo dialogs with Krishna.
Can give 5/10.

In one word Nadiya is a good film. First of all the famous english writer Agatha Christie should be appreciated. She started writing investigative novels only for challenging Arthur Conan Doyal and his Sherlock Holmes.. Even though she couldn’t defeat Doyal or Holmes in popularity, that competition gave birth to a character Hercule Poyrott and many thrilling investigations by him.
AK Sajan has adpated Agatha Christie’s famous novel “Murder on the Orient Express” for his screenplay and portrayed it in kerala background with many additions. The film starts by the arrest of a terrorist from a train, and the special investiation team reopens the souparnika express” murder case. Three murders in the same compartment. SureshGopi plays the lead character of Sharaffudeen, the head of the team.
The film moves forward by proving each murder successfully. The investigation of Nadiya’s murder becomes very lengthy and it drags many times. But the stunning climax makes the film really catchy. The film should have been made more visually appealing. Too many matters are said through only dialogs. There exists many dangling links without description, such as the minor accident at railway station, the victim’s escape, hiding the evidences etc. A novel has enough space and time to describe all the suspects. But AK Sajan could not make it compact when converted into a screenplay.
The cameo role of Prithviraj could have been avoided. In short “Nadiya Kollappetta Rathri” is worth a watch. Can give 6/10.

Lal Jose once again proves that he is one of the best in the bussiness. His latest venture Arabikatha is built up in the background of communism. The movie tells the story of a sincere left activist Mukundan(Sreenivasan), and his life’s challenges. The director and the script writer have made a sincere effort to portray a realistic and socially relevant theme.
The movie starts with depicting Mukundan’s social life in his village. Indrajith plays the role of Anwar, the right hand of Mukundan. They live only for the party and works as per the real ethics of communism. As a result of some underplays in his own party, Mukundan falls in a financial crisis and goes to Dubai for finding a job to solve his crisis. There he faces many challenges and fate changes his life completely. Samvritha plays the role of a nurse working for years in Dubai. Jayasurya’s character carries some negative shades..
The movie shows the invasion of capitalism and the loss of relevance of communist theories in our daily life. It gives some flashes into the change of social life in communist nations like China, Russia etc. The film shows the pros and cons of Dubai
life of malayalees in its most realistic manner. Laljose’s signature is clearly visible in the movie. The scene which shows Mukundan leaving for Dubai and the ending scene are director’s specials.
There are some minor flaws in the script and could have corrected them easily, by adding one or two scenes. In short Arabikatha is a must watch for all movie lovers. Since there are a lot of left thinkers in kerala, the movie can get more acceptance. Can give 7.5/10.
