How to Configure BSNL EVDO USB BroadBand in Linux

Configuring the USB in linux is very much similar to configuring any in . 3 steps are involved.

  1. Detecting the device
  2. Configuring .conf
  3. Dialling

In most cases the is auto detected and drivers are automatically loaded. You can check your /dev/ directory for any of these files.

ttyusb0, ttyusb1, ttyusb2 ……

After plugging in he modem, a new device should appear. In most cases it ttyusb0. If no file is appearing then you will have to manually load the drivers by issuing the following command.

modprobe usbserial vendor=0×05c6 product=0×6000

This will load the drivers and make your new device visible in /dev/

Now add the following lines to your .conf

[Dialer Defaults]

Modem=/dev/ttyUSB0
Baud=115200
Dial Command = ATDT
Baud=115200
Dial Command = ATDT
init1=ATZ
init2=AT+CRM=1
Flow Control= (CRTSCTS)
Username = <your username>
Password = <your password>
Phone = #777
Stupid Mode = 1

Now try the command wvdial in your terminal. It should work.

TataIndicom USB internet configuration in Linux

Many of us have USB internet dongles from or Reliance. Here is how you can configure it to work with .

Edit the /etc/.conf file to add these extra lines.

[Dialer Defaults]

Modem=/dev/ttyUSB0
Baud=115200
Dial Command = ATDT
Baud=115200
Dial Command = ATDT
init1=ATZ
init2=AT+CRM=1
Flow Control= (CRTSCTS)
Username = internet
Password = internet
Phone = #777
Stupid Mode = 1

The line  Modem=/dev/ttyUSB0  needs to be changed according to your machine settings. To find out the exact device, follow the procedure.

  1.  unplug the device
  2. goto /dev/
  3. plug the device
  4. type ls and find the latest device detected
  5. replace the /dev/ttyUSB0 with the new device path

For all the above settings including the phone number, username and password are correct. You need not change anything except for the modem name.

Ping me if you have any troubles configuring your wireless modem.

The Chines are coming…

Posted By :- Jyothi M John

I am into management of Computer business. The electronics market is the most volatile market after the currency market. The way thing’s are going now - I can see the electronics business going out of the hand’s of wholesalers and retailers in the next ten years. We are in a era where the Internet is the new world. As more and more people get access to internet, more and more services will be moved out of the retail shelves and into web pages.

Since we are into the wholesale side of business - I can already feel the pinch of the Chines taking over some of our market. The concept of Factory - Distributor (Wholesaler) - Retailer - End User is dying. The axe has already fallen on the distributor. This has happen because of the consolidation in the retail market and the growth of retail chains like Wall-mart. Due to their volumes they now dictate what brands and what prices will go on their shelves. But this is short lived as in the next 10 years I can see the full potential of the Internet being unleashed.

The Factories will soon have websites, from which the End User can directly buy. With more and more thing’s becoming Disposable - there will be no question of Service and Support (We are already living in an era where it is considered to be more economical to use a spoon once and then thrown away - only to be picked up by recyclers and smelted back into a spoon than to wash it and re use it). You just have to log into their website and pick up the items you want and pay using one of the internet payment services (Paypal…) or even your credit card. Depending on what and where you are ordering People like DHL and other Courier Service will deliver it to you within four hours or within a week.

The first one’s to be hit will be the electronic industry, but soon you will see all the all the other industries following suit. So if you are investing into the future it will be a better Idea to invest into one of these factories or into very high end solution providers - The likes of IBM or Mobme (Kenney that is for you :) )

I would appreciate if you guy’s could leave your comment’s just below. All kinds of comments are welcome…

Linux Based Thin Clients - DIY

In my last post I talked about Thin Clients. This is a Do It Yourself instruction manual to make your thin clients using and basic computer .

You will require the following:

1. A PC with Small Form Factor casing, uATX Motherboard (Onboard - sound/VGA/LAN/USB), Memory(256MB is more than enough), Processor (Any Low end processor is good enough) {with a monitor the total cost should come to less than Rs. 10,000)

2. 1GB Flash Disk Drive (Thumb Drive)

3. Knoppix (you can also use DSL - damm small , but is does not have the looks and the extra SW that Knoppix comes with), Syslinux (download the zip version)

Knoppix comes as a ISO image for a CD. You have to extract all the files from the image (Try winrar or ISO buster). Copy all the contents of the CD to your formated flash disk drive. Once you are done copying run the following commands under DOS. Please note that the commands should be run when you are inside the drive. For example if the your flash disk drive is i: then you should run this command under i: in DOS.

copy boot\isolinux *.*
del isolinux.bin
ren isolinux.cfg syslinux.cfg

These commands will basically copy the boot files from /boot directory to the root directory. Delete the isolinux.bin and then rename isolinu.cfg to syslinux.cfg

Once you are done with the above - extract the contents from the ZIP files for syslinux into your hard drive. After extracting the contents, go into DOS mode and and change your current Directory into the directory that you extracted the contents of the ZIP file. There will be a directory called win32 inside that directory, change your current directory to the win32 dir. There is an exe file inside called syslinux.exe. Run the executable file and as parameters give the drive name of the flash disk drive (if your flash disk drive is i: then type: “syslinux.exe i:” and press enter. This should make your flash disk drive bootable.

Now stick in the flash memory into the USB ports of the new PC without Hard Drive. Boot it, go into the BIOS and change the first boot device to USB FDD, save and reboot. Now the PC will boot into Knoppix Linux. The good part is that mounts the flash disk as read only, so the end used no will not be able to change any settings and mess it around (Just like the embedded OS inside thin clients.

Knoppix comes bundled with applications like Openoffice and Gimp and also Terminal server client, in case you want to configure it to run remote desktop over the network.

Prices Dropping - Computer Hardware

Going to buy a Hard Drive or a digital camera? Wait

Prices will be dropping soon Hard Drives, Digital Cameras and LCD Screens. On the hard drives the 80GB hard drives will be replaced by 160GB (around Rs. 2400). Watch out for the drop in digital cameras - they are substantial. 6MP cameras should be around Rs. 5000. Again on the LCD’s 17″ screen’s will be replaced by 19″ wide screen (Rs. 9000). Laser Printers have also become very cheep lately. You should be able to get an entry level Laser Printer for around Rs. 4000.

The way prices are dropping on computer - the Gov should consider feeding people computers instead of food grains…
