Computer Science Vs Mechanical Engineering

This post is a bit late, but I hope it will help those school students who will be looking at an engineering next year to decide which branch they want to go for.

Everyone says IT is going down.

Many students are opting for just because someone told them IT is unstable and is going down. I have a few questions for them. Answer these questions and you will know what to choose.

Where are all the mechanical Engineers going after their studies ?

What’s the Ratio of IT companies to Mechanical companies who are recruiting from the campus ?

IT took a hit some years back. But still who is the single largest recruiter ?

Do not choose just because IT is going down. If you are passionate about it, then its ok. But if you don’t have a choice of your own and is looking only at the job prospects IT is still the best. Computers and Information Technology has come of age and is here to stay.

Engineering is not the end of the world

If you are ready to look outside the engineering “Glamour”, then there lots of other exciting possibilities out there. Insurance, banking and retail sector need a lot of people and they are facing a quality crisis right now.

There are a lot of job opportunities for skilled labour in western countries. And believe me in some countries plumbers, carpenters and other works that involve manual labour makes twice as much as an engineer makes.

Side Note

We need to think straight, and don’t go by what others tell you. Some times people give opinion just for the sake of giving an opinion. Do your research thoroughly and consult people who have already been there. Don’t ever believe what Malayala Manorama writes about job opportunities.

The "IEEE Stupidity" Continues

This post is a continuation of my earlier post IEEE Projects and Poor Engineering Students. Please go through that post to understand the background of this post.

The hot shot lecturer makes a new rule. He decides that no student will be allowed to sit in the class who has not got a project synopsis approved by him before next Monday. Frantic students got hold of an IEEE login from somewhere and downloaded many projects and submitted to him. Even from those many got rejected.

My cousin got approval after submitting 20 . She send me the document for the one she got approval for. The lecturer even commented that its a very simple project and there is nothing much to do in it. Still he approved the project cos of sympathy for her, I believe.

Now I opened the document and read the synopsis and my head started spinning. Complex matrix operations, Cosine transformations, complex data compressions algorithms, and on top of all that a network protocol implementation. And guess what, its a combined project from Berkeley, MIT and Harvard.

My poor cousin, she is a brilliant student and is very keen to learn new things. But this is too much. She wont even get enough time to learn the mathematics involved in the project.

Read some of my posts about finalĀ  year projects.

My School is the First School in Kerala To Have a Campus Blog

Ever since we started promoting campus blogging as the future of Campus publishing we have been getting some good response from various educational institutions. I admit that we faced some skepticism also from some institutions, typical Kerala mentality.

Now the good news is that my own school has launched its blog under the campus blogging initiative. Now when my school does it, it has to be grand. The Inauguration ceremony coincided with the inauguration of the Zonal CBSE schools youth festival which my school is hosting this year. Two ministers and a bishop came of the inauguration.

The blog named SkpsBytes is already full of content from the youth festival. Its the official place to find updated information about the youth festival. In the future it will be the place to watch for to know what SKPSians are upto.

Happy Blogging Friends !!!!

IEEE Projects and Poor Engineering Students

Today my cousin who is a final year engineering student in a well reputed college in central Kerala came upto me and asked whether I had an IEEE membership. Instantly I understood her need cos i have been hearing the same question from many, she needed a project for her final semester and her teachers would allow only .

Now whats with this IEEE criteria ? There are many engineering colleges in Kerala who set this stupid IEEE criteria. Now how many of those staff members can actually guide the student through an IEEE project ? How many of them even understand the synopsis of an IEEE project ? Ive been wrestling with computers for over 12 years now and most of those IEEE stuff is still Greek to me.

I suggested her that she do a Voip implementation using the open source telephony framework asterisk. Its something that I can help her with, and also its some skill thats in huge demand. But she said, another Voip project got rejected and this wont be approved. How crappy… a project getting rejected just because it has a familiar word “Voip”. The situation is no different with academic seminar.

Let us be very practical here. Will the 4 year good for nothing syllabus make the student capable of doing an IEEE project. All these students are going to join some project institution and buy a project. Whats the point in forcing them to do the so called IEEE project.

In my opinion we should let them do something that can do on their own within the limited time period. Even if its a simple project, doing on your own is far far better than going to an institute and getting a ready made “IEEE” project.

Higher Education American Style

Its only recently that I understood the American way of . My friend Issac wrote GRE and went to the USA for his masters 3 years ago. A one hour voice chat session with him proved to be very informative.

In India we have a free education system. All government education establishments provide free . Even many private institutions are funded by the government. The students gets to study for free.

But in the US is not free. An MS course would cost you anything between 20 lakhs to 40 lakhs based on the course and institution. But quite a lot of students gets to study without paying any fees from their pockets.

The system there is funded in a superb way. Students have lots of work options. They can work for various departments, they can assist their professors, even they can teach some subjects to their juniors. All of these are not difficult jobs. But they are provided as a means for the government to provide the student with a chance to pay for his on his own. Also most of the universities are research places. Many companies outsource their research to these institutions and all that money goes into helping these students.

The beauty of this concept is that, students there value more that we do here. We get it for free, and for them they have to earn it. When you earn something its a lot different from getting something for free. Also, paying for ones own is an empowering act.
