June 30th, 2008 — Experiences, Relationships
I recently had an eye opening experience in one of the orkut discussion forums. A thread started by a person to boast about Indian culture and thrash western culture turned nasty when discussions turned to the topic “Premarital sex”.
The Indians gained an advantage with this topic, but it was short lived with a reply from a western counter part. The following was his comment.
“You are blaming us for having premarital sex, but its not as bad as marrying cousins and uncles“.
That was the end of that discussion. There was no argument from the Indian side to counter it. We lost the war, but it created a wave of thoughts in me.
Never think of any culture as superior or inferior. All cultures evolved into its current form cos the society needed it. For the Hindus marrying cousins is very acceptable. In Tamil Nadu, girls marry their uncles. From a western perspective its bad.
Cohabitation is very acceptable in the western culture. But parents here faint at the thought of it. Muslims are legally allowed to have 4 wifes simultaneously. Divorce is just three words for them. If you are a non muslim and if you are divorced, you will face some serious discrimination in the society.
Now, Which is wrong and which is right ?
I guess the answer would be, “Everything is right“.

Today I Opened the Assissi magazine (Christian magazine) and was surprised to see an advertisement. Chavara Matrimony (matrimony site for Christians) is conducting a Marriage Fair. The event is called “Mega Marriage Fair”.
Now, for my readers from the western world, We do things a bit different here. We dont have dating sites, instead we have matrimonial sites. Both are the same, but in a matrimonial site people end up getting married. So is this marriage fair an Indian adaptation of blind dating groups ?
I dont know how a marriage fair works cos ive never attended one. For those who dont believe, you can check my DOB in the about me page. But the advertisement says “Its your golden chance to find a suitable life partner”. Hmmmm Im going to imagine how it will be…
Will it be like different stalls for different girl categories ? software stall, nurses stall, NRI stall, govt employed stall, teachers stall, jobless stall etc…. And men will walk by looking at the items in display, Will there be resumes ? Or is it like “Swayam Varam”
Or will be it like stalls for men… ahh I dont want to think that way…. my ego wont let me think that way.
If anyone has experience attending marriage fairs, please comment

I have been thinking about this concepts of management after watching Last week’s Hard Talk show on BBC.
Let me first explain the concepts before going about the pro’s and con’s of each style. First the Top down management is a management structure in which, the managers are appointed directly -with or without relevent experience but with the necessary qualification. The Bottom Up management style is where the manager’s are appointed by promoting the lower-rung people who have plenty of experience but not necessarily with the qualifications.
The Biggest drawback of Top Down Management structure is that the Manager lacks understanding of the actual setup and structure of the company. They may have learned a lot at school but when it comes to implementation, there will be a lot of hurdles, you never read about in the books. The biggest advantage being that the person has ready made answers, and can avoid a lot of mistakes.
For Bottom Up Management the biggest disadvantage being that the person is not a subscriber of out of the box ideas. And the biggest advantage being that he has a total understanding of the whole structure of the company and knows where to put enough oil for the functioning to be smooth. But without aggressive and out of the box ideas, it is very difficult to grow a company these days.
Me being a product of Bottom up management structure, have a soft conner for this structure. But I feel that there should be some balance in the management structure, to maximize the profitability. On the top level management it should be always bottom up managers - as these guy’s will always have the respect of the people below, and also these guy’s will have a better understanding of the rick factors in running a company. On the advisory levels, it is better to have top down management people - as these people will bring in a lot of fresh and out of the box Ideas. And moreover these guy’s will have a better understanding of today’s technology and concepts to implement them and improve the productivity of the company.
Please do leave comments on as to what you think of these management structures.

It is now very easy to get common printers to work as network printers using CUPS. Thanks to www.linuxprinting.org and technology giants like HP releasing drivers for Linux. For your printer to work with Linux you have to get the following things:
1. CUPS - (www.cups.org)
2. Foomatic filters - (http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/Foomatic)
3. Ghostscript - ( http://www.ghostscript.com/awki)
4. LSB (LINUX STANDARD BASE) Package - (http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/LSB)
(Please download the right package depending on your Hardware and distribution)
Most of the new releases of all the major distributions of Linux are LSB complaint.
Once you have all these packages installed, get the cups service up. Use the GUI or the command line to add the printer to CUPS.If your printer is not listed on CUPS, download the right drivers (PPD file) from the web. For some brands which have not released the drivers, you might be able to find open drivers, which might not give you the full functionality of the printer. Once you have added the printer on to CUPS, try and print a test page. If it comes all right you have your printer up and running on CUPS. Now you can use Samba to share the printer with other windows clients that you may be using in your network.

Spamming is a serious issue. It leads to quite a lot of resource wastage like loss of bandwidth, loss of time - deleting spam…Unfortunately there is no foolproof method of stopping spammers. The motive behind spamming can be diverse - Like spreading virus, getting mail addresses, some mails come with links on them - so that the user click’s it and increases the traffic on the website. Ultimately it is money or fame…
To reduce spam mails make sure you have a good firewall installed on your server. Your mail server should be configured not to receive mails from open relay server. Sign on to common forums like CBL & SBL which release a blacklist of ip-addresses which you can block off. A good antispam software running on your server will also help filter spam.
To make sure your network is not sending out spam mails make sure you have antivirus installed on all the clients and they are updated on a regular basis. Again the firewall is very important. Other thing’s that you can introduce is like having digital signatures, or making sure that your smtp server accepts only authenticated mails ETC.
Though there are drawback’s to all this - a real mail may get marked as spam, the percentage is very small that the risk is worth taking. There are more advanced way’s to reduce spam like installing a firewall device, or having a key-exchange etc. This might not be practical for smaller organizations which don’t even have a public IP address.
Here is a link on how to reduce spam comments in your blog:
