Today morning I received a link from @zeqox which redirects to this report from Manorama. Its a piece about IT Professionals and Alcohol. Stupid claims follows.
- IT guys drink a lot (Who Doesn’t ?)
- Malayalis were caught drinking in Bangalore and Chennai (WTF ?)
- Salaries are increasing day by day (Havent this guy heard of recession ?)
- IT guys drinks in Five star hotels
What is their “Own Reporter” trying to convey in this article ? Was he trying to fill a column with nonsense ?
I think its time that we did something to prevent all of this, something beyond blogging. We need an agency here to audit press and the content they spread. They should be held accountable for the information they broadcast.
I am not suggesting a China model regulation, but an audit process in which published news and the approach taken is verified. If wrong or misleading information is published some sort of penalty must be given.

Don’t know why Manorama is employing illiterate reporters..
Comment by Ranjith — July 28, 2009 @ 8:19 am
is there anyway we could sue these reporters???
like using RTI act to know their sources…. manorama is as bad as any b-grade magazine when it comes to such columns…..

Ofcourse they should. There should be regulations in many ways. They dont have any problems in putting misleading news. And putting photos and names of criminals, and people in the newspapers should be stopped. Only reporting should be provided. It is high time to act. We cant wait until the opponent is powerless. What our action should do is to make them powerless.

hahahahaaaa, this made my morning!
)
MM proves itself again n again n again. What about starting something on the lines of “rotten tomatoes” by the Blogger community to award the worst newsreport, the worst reporter, the worst newspaper and so on?? Any doubts as to who will sweep all the awards?
Comment by scorpiogenius — July 28, 2009 @ 3:12 pm
Manorama caters to the serial watching moms and aunties in Kerala. All their publications manage to sensationalize issues like these and they dont forget to give them a sleazy touch. The other the my next-door neighbor aunty was very apprehensive when she heard her daughter was coming back home in a Sleeper bus. Later on I realized that Vanitha, yet another manorama publication had carried an article about “sleeper class” buses from bangalore to Kerala being something like u know.. Bangbus, sex-wagon or may be a Orgy Bus!
The author of this particular report is twerp as noone gets caught in this nation for drinking legal liquor. If at all some malayalis are caught in bangalore during some parties, they would have indulged in some other nasty illegal activities other than drinking.

I agree with Scorpiogenious. that would be a good constructive idea. Create an association. And give awards. I hope other newspapers will be competing to report this. If and only if they don’t have hidden group of people.

Pingback by Response to Malayala Manorama’s Report about Liquor in IT field ... Ranjith K Avarachan — July 29, 2009 @ 9:11 am
Every news papers will be having their own policies and ethics which they do believe which is good for them.
Malayala manorama(Same as Times of India)have the policies to increase their circulation by creating interest in the news they report not by reporting the authentic news.
Its very easy for to compare news which is coming in the news papers.
News papers like Hindu really believe in their ethics in reporting only things which has happened. They never will comment or write a column saying these and these might happen.
But Newspapers like Times or manorama writes predictions as they get more reader attraction to the predicted ones rather than happened ones.
For example Hindu wrote “Micheal Jackson is dead” where as Times wrote
“King of Pop Departed”( For attraction) and “Michael Jackson died of drug overdose”(Which they weren’t sure about it but wrote it to create a curiosity in readers.
Only bad effect on this policy is that people will tend to believe that the news are authentic when they repeat the reporting. Same as the news mentioned above. This creates a wrong idea about the Bangalore IT professionals.

MM like most other papers have an eye purely on its bottomline..
)
Most of the articles would be very very general in nature which
1. needs zero amount of research
2. Has some sensationalism attached
3. likely to be quoted and discussed (like we are doing
The point is that they are in a recession mode too and sensationalism and innuendo sells more papers and gets more ad revenue
Comment by Serah — July 29, 2009 @ 3:57 pm
Manorama is a monopoly there in kerala. Unless they have some statistics of a research they did about this, they are so stupid to report like this.

manorama is the only newspaper worth reading in Kerala.PERIOD.only trivandrumites hates it because of their inferiority complex with the growth of kochi city.go to orkut trivandrum community and see the bias.I wonder why in the first place trivandrum made the capital of kerala!
Comment by Achachu — August 2, 2009 @ 1:19 pm
@Achachu,
I do not know what you mean.
As far as I know,
1) Manorama is a Kottayam based newspaper.
2) The author of this article is a Kottayam native.
So, I do not know where Trivandrum and Kochi came up.

Any body ever saw an Issue of the WEEK . Hard to believe it is under the same management aint it ? . About Milans comment on manorama being averse to new technologies . Ever heard of manoramas own IT company in kottayam, yes they have one and they do data warehousing and SAP.Manorama is a classic example of an establishment which has outgrown its management . What they need is some good editors. OK ! OK ! U say Manorama is waste but which is good then ? Free unbiased press exists only in the fantasies of the mass.

With in two days Manorama link will go away. Thus I am putting the same as comment.

Kenny i totally agree with you,there should be some kinda agency to check these atrocities.I don’t know if you are aware of Integrated finance company(IFCL) which manorama itself had advertised as its subsidiary during its early stages collected huge amounts of money and disappeared(i know this is irrelevant to this post but i just wanted to show how money minded they are)i personally had experience of them framing my family in one prominent case alleging that we helped some national traitors to pass on information to pakistan.And after the authorities found how baseless those allegation were they cleared us,the amount of mental trauma my family went through is more than what words could explain,all this to sell some more copies of their filthy toilet paper at the expense of some one elses suffering.
This is just one case countless number of cooked up stories have already been published and are still being published some one should draw a line somewhere, we shouldnt let these people take the people for a ride according to their whim and fancy,or make them print it in big letter “FICTION” at the heading.
