After the land slide victory by the congress in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Catholic Church is claiming that its their efforts against communism that made this victory possible for the congress. I believe that the communist party dug their own grave with all the infighting and the Pinarayi factor. Anyways, thats material for another post, and a debatable one too.
While having a discussion about this, I opened one of my old Malayalam text books and flipped through the pages. Then I realized some, most of the content that we learn is religious material. The book contains stories from Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Bible and Quran. Most of the poems that we learn are about various Hindu Gods.
While we have all these religious BS in our textbooks, what wrong did that innocent 7th standard chapter do ? It never asked you to quit your religion, It did not preach atheism. All that the chapter said was that you need not fill in your caste and religion columns.
The various religious groups took up this issue and resulted in the brutal killing of a teacher. How ironic is that incident considering the fact that he was someone who was teaching all these religious BS to students and got killed by the same people.
Isnt it time to remove all sorts of religious material from text books ?
Religious stuff should better be taught at home. School is not the right place for religious studies.

i dont think teaching stories from ramayana mahabharatha bible or quran relegious….actually all these books are having great values…by teaching such stories in in a class room will help students…But the ball is in the court of the teachers…they shuld teach the lessons in a secular manner by understanding the real values in the text books…
it doesnt make sense in saying that we shuld not teach ezhuthachan’s poems or kunchan nambiars poems since they refer hindu gods…

Hmm, its a thin line between classifying those given in text books as ‘Mythological material’ or ‘Religious material’. As all religions are based on myths, it is easy to generalize them. Guess, children should be given an opportunity to take a judgement call as they grow up. It is better to give ‘right information’ than purposefully ignoring all such info.
However, textbooks should be factually right. You can’t infuse propagandas into textbooks. So, even if communist govt. puts a chapter on atheism, i dont think it is gonna brainwash every child. Conditioning in any form is not good, whether it is religious or otherwise.

My point was that, there was no need for a protest that led to the killing of a teacher on the 7th std chapter issue. If you can talk about Jesus and Rama in text books, then you can talk about not filling in caste and religion columns.

i do agree with kenney. cast and religion should b eliminated from the government formalities and it should b restricted to the birth certificate and in ones heart. but here comes a problem. the cast based reservations. i dnt think how much v blog on or speak against the evil reservation but v all know that it is going to b there in our socity as long as it can get votes for different political parties.for that filing of cast and religion is necessary, sadly for the communist.
every historic literature is part of the religions that were in that particular land. so our great historic literature has religious influence but they all were great works and had great values in it. v need to teach these values and pass on our values to the generations to come for that v need these type of lessons in text

ഇന്ഡ്യ ഒരു മതേതര രാജ്യമാണ്. അതിനര്ത്ഥം മതമില്ലാത്ത രാജ്യമെന്നല്ല. എല്ലാ മതസ്തരേയും ഒരേപോലെ കാണുവാന് പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്ന രാജ്യമെന്നാണ്. അതു കൊണ്ടാണ് സര്ക്കാര് തലത്തില് പുസ്തകം പ്രസിദ്ധപ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോള് രാമായണ, ബൈബിള്, ഖുറാന് കഥകള് ഉള്പ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നത്. ഒരു മതത്തിലുള്ളവരും ഇതുവരെയും ഒരു എതിര്പ്പും പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു കണ്ടതു മില്ല.
മതമില്ലാത്ത ജീവനിലൂടെ മതേതരത്വമല്ല പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ചത്. സര്ക്കാരിന്റെ തന്നെ പല പ്രവര്ത്തികളുടേയും ഘടകവിരുദ്ധ പ്രചരണമായിരുന്നു അത്. ഒരു മതവും വേണ്ടെന്നു ഉറച്ച് വിശ്വസിപ്പിച്ച ഒരു ദളിത് ദരിദ്ര യുവാവ് പത്താം ക്ലാസ് കഴിയുമ്പോള് മുന്നോട്ട് പഠിക്കണമെങ്കില് സര്ക്കാരില് നിന്നും അനുവദിക്കുന്ന പല സൌജന്യങ്ങളും കൂടിയേ തീരു എന്ന് അവന് മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു. എന്നാല് സ്വന്തം ജാതി എന്തെന്നു എഴുതികൊടുത്താല് മാത്രം കിട്ടാവുന്ന സൌജന്യങ്ങള്. ആ യുവ മനസ്സ് ആകെ കണ്ഫ്യൂഷനിലാകില്ലേ. ഇതുവരെ പഠിപ്പിച്ചതെല്ലാം വെറുതെയെന്നു തോന്നിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു യുവജന കൂട്ടത്തെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കില്ലേ.
സ്വന്തം ജാതി വെളിപ്പെടുത്താതെ റിസര്വേഷന് സൌജന്യം ആര്ക്കെങ്കിലും കിട്ടുമെന്നു കരുതുന്നുണ്ടോ. അപ്പോള് ‘മതമില്ലാത്ത ജീവന്’ എന്ന പാഠം എന്തു ഗുണപാഠമായിരിക്കും കുട്ടികളില് ഉണ്ടാക്കുക.
ജാതി വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി പ്രത്യേക ജാതിയിലുള്ളവര്ക്ക് മാത്രം ആനുകൂല്യങ്ങളായി നല്കുവാര് കോടിക്കണക്കിനു തുക എല്ലാ കൊല്ലവും ബജറ്റില് വകയിരുത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. ആ പ്രവൃത്തിയെല്ലാം ഒരു വശത്തുകൂടെ നടക്കുമ്പോള്, ഒരിടത്തും ജാതി എഴുതേണ്ടാ എന്ന് മതമില്ലാത്ത ജീവനില് കൂടി സര്ക്കാര് തന്നെ പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് വൈരുദ്ധ്യമല്ലേ.
ഇതു കൊണ്ടൊക്കെ കൂടിയാണ് ആ പാഠം ഉള്ക്കൊള്ളിക്കുന്നതിനെതിരെ ജനവികാരം ഉണ്ടായത്. രാമായണ, ബൈബിള്, ഖുറാന് കഥകള് ഉള്പ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നതിനെതിരെ ഒരു ജനവികാരവും ഇതു വരെ ഉണ്ടായതായറിവില്ല.

Are you saying that caste and religion are only for getting the reservation and benefits from the government ?
I was addressing a much larger problem, the hypocrisy which we show. Whats so special about religions which gets them a special untouchable status. The fanatics have torn this country apart and still we protect them….. wonderful…
This has reached to a stage where we wont allow any sort of attempts to educate the public… to keep ones religion to themselves…

Religion is a bottle of wine that makes you delirious.If religious contents are printed in the textbooks then next timethe government should consider printing wine ads on the textbook covers.That way it can save on the cost of printing the books

Its not the text books that should change, its the attitude of the people. Our malayalam text books have stories of great value – when more importance would be given to the moral rather than the religion, this place would be a better place.
Shame on the guys who took the 7th standard issue to a different level. It should have ended with a letter to the some higher officials who were in charge of deciding the content for the book.

I don’t think teaching religious matters to schoolchildren will do any harm. All those materials have some good portion of knowledge if seen in the right way.
