My Middle Finger and the MG University : A True Story

    December 12, 2008 by Jr.

    Author: Jithin Krishnan

Student of literature, Sacred Hearts College.. Almost about to pass out.. Results pending of course... Volunteer of Make A Difference, and PR in charge of the same.. Jr.

If you go through this blog, what you’ll find is a lot of articles on the inefficiency and outright plain stupidity of the management at CUSAT..

This was so much so, that one time I asked Kenney, how come that MG University was never featured at all..

He replied that it was because he had no “first hand experience..”

Well, I have first hand experience, lots of it actually, and allow me to enlighten you… You Cusatians have it easy..

And by the way, I’d probably never have written this article if it wasn’t for what happened yesterday and today.. :)

I do the BA English course.. At SH.. It’s a conventional BA course, but when people ask me how many years, I say 4 years these days..

    WhY?

Well, I’m into my sixth sem, and the second sem results came out only a week ago.. My juniors have it worse off, though..

Hopefully I won’t flunk any of my papers.. If I do, I’ll have to go around saying it’s a 5 year course from now on… (sigh)

They say that once the papers reach the University, they are just thrown into a godown, and then hauled back up when evaluation time comes.. If you’re lucky, the examiners would have got to your paper before the rats did.. If, you’re lucky, that is..

Here are some of the University’s most notorious evaluators caught in action..

“Who the fuck is Shakespere, Stuart??”

In the five exams I’ve written, three have been screwed up..

And this is what the exam co-ordination committee at MG looks like..

“Wonder what the VC saw in us??”

    “More of himself, probably.”

One was my own department’s fault.. But the University would have none of it.. They had to outshine… :)

They had already messed up the question papers for our third sem History exam I think.. But, hey that was ok, they rescheduled it for next month, and we wrote..

But, this time it was even more hilarious..

So, they gave us the wrong question paper again, cancelled the exam and asked us to go home..

And today morning, we get the good news..

Not only has yesterday’s paper been cancelled, but today’s, and Monday’s as well.. And the revised exam dates??

    31st December, 1st January and 2nd January..

    What that means for me…

    1. I missed out on a Bangalore trip that was supposed to happen yesterday..

    2. I’ll miss out on a road trip that was supposed to happen during Christmas..

    3. I’ll have to spend New Year’s Day memorizing Freud and his fucked upĀ  psychoanalytic approaches.. And,

    4. Since the exam has been delayed by a couple of weeks, now I’m gonna have to go around saying that my course is 5 and a half years long…

What I don’t know is why people continue to tolerate the University even now..

What we should have is a University for every region… I think places as far as even Pathanamthitta, fall into the MG University’s clutches..

And, as everything else, the power structure at the University is politicised.. I won’t be surprised if they use our answer papers to manufacture recycled toilet paper…

“MG Companies bring to you, the new and improved, printed toilet paper.. Read, and wipe, at the low cost of destroying a student’s life.. “

Whatever the case maybe, I’m sure our’s is the worst University of all time..

If you have a University that’s worse than mine, let me know in the comments.. Coz, then, you are officiallly the most tortured student soul in the universe…

Until then though, let people like me hang on to that honour..

    :)

    1. Hmm.. MG looks worse. But thats expected of them. But CUSAT boasts itself to be the best and is considered to be equivalent to an IIT and stuff. So they should be very careful.

The problem with CUSAT is the politics there. If you go there you will see atleast 5 security personnel completely jobless, just irritating every visitor.

    2. I am a btech guy at Rajagiri. My exams had to be postponed by one week because MGU chose it as the best time for their youth festival! Newspapers and TV called the event BORING. They should have cancelled that event than to earn the curses of thousands who had exams in nov-dec time.

Anyway thanks for the revelation on what happens to our papers when they reach the center. I dont have to feel bad about my marks anymore!

And to thwart the toilet paper mafia, I will fill my pens with a mix of….. well, wiping your ass on my answer sheets wont be a pleasant experience!

    3. I dont know weather to laugh or cry…

To tell you the truth – this is the same case with almost all the universities in India! First they make you write exams (you pay through your nose for the course) then delay the results – for god knows how long…

People dont realize that the precious time of our youth is being wasted in bureaucratic red tape!!! I remember my degree days – I got a job outside India immediately after my final exam’s but had to wait for almost 6 months before I could get out of the country…it took 2 months for my results to come out…another 2 months for the provisional certificate (saying that you have passed the Degree) to come and another 2 months for the passport to come!

These delay’s are becoming un-acceptable. I do understand that there is a process that has to be followed – but the thing that I cannot understand is that when we are paying for the service – why do we have to put up with this 3rd class service?

    6. It is nothing new. It took five years for me to complete my four year B Tech back in 1990 under MGU.

    7. kerala university is also not tht bad in postponing exams…actually i think there is a competition goin on between kerala and MG in that case…CUSAT is very punctual in conducting exams…nd when considering CALICUT, Kerala nd MG are far far better…

and there was an incident when Students made kerala university to postpone exams..
sme tricky guy started sending messages saying that he got genuine information from university tht the exams are postponed.the SMS spread like fire and telephone calls flooded universit call centre…enquiring whether xams are really postponed?

at last university senate decided to postpone the xams to avoid confusion…

ny way i shuld say kerala is better in case of evaluation….

and i think its high time for a technical university in kerala….

    8. @ Jesvin,
      Great idea :)

      @ JMJ,
Six months when you did your BA.. Any ideas how much it has escalated to now? And, of course !! It is unacceptable to be given shit service to..
And, these days, nobody can afford such time lage either !!

      @ Everybody else,
Most universities are essentially of the same structure.. Welcome to the most literate state in the country.. Yeah right !!

    9. And I thought VTU (Vishweshwaraiah Technological University, or better known as V Torture U) was bad!

    10. @ Krishnaraj “2-3 months” late??

I am currently having S4 classes in Calicut University..

Our S3 exams have not taken place and are not expected for another 3-4 months. The fact exists that S3 exams of our batch are over in MG and CUSAT and are going on in Kerala university..

Another thing is that the S1S2 results have not yet been published even after around 5 months from exams. All other univ in kerala have published the results..

Now decide which is the best uni…

(If our university can successfully postpone our results for another 4-5 months, I can be placed in some company even before any results are out.. I think the companies can take into consideration the +2 marks of the students and their looks…) :)

    11. No wonder why sometimes some students take their anger out on university VCs.

      Comment by Kenney Jacob — December 13, 2008 @ 11:01 am

    12. All i want to say is that, when I paid my fees 3 days late I had to pay a late fee to the university…I do not understand why the university dont pay us a late fee for delaying our exams and results beyond the stipulated period. Is it because they think they are above us and can do whatever they want to do with our lives..or is it because we are silent sufferers who will not dare to question the university because we are scared they might screw with our certificates. Isn’t our action or inaction rather..to some extent responsible for breeding such irresponsible behaviour??

      Comment by Jithin — December 13, 2008 @ 11:13 am

    13. i am rosemary..and i too am a victim of the evry changing exams dates….

i totally agree with jithin..its us the silent student body who is encouraging this atrocities committed against us…

      Comment by rose — December 13, 2008 @ 3:33 pm

    14. Student body? Did you say student body??
Well, allowing the student bodies to be politicised is also part of the problem I think..
The student body in my college for example, doesn’t have too much potential..
And I’ve barely heard of any other college where the scenario is different..

      Comment by Jr. — December 14, 2008 @ 2:12 pm

    15. cusat does hv a “Student Body”…

      Comment by Jithin — December 14, 2008 @ 10:29 pm

    16. well its quite true. They are preparing the worst timetables and the valuation system is also utter foolishness.
I have experience it from my s1s2 results.

      Comment by Kidilan Saju — December 16, 2008 @ 2:16 pm

    17. Worser with calicut university !ive written my final year bba exam distance education in june2008!… now its jan 2009 n no results yet! WTF.. they wer sooo particular abt paying the fee in time n all n tht too only in dollars will they accept.!.. n wen it comes to results n wen we enquire abt it.. its like they been doing us a big favour untill nw.. n we r still beggin them!
all my classmates had to cancell their mba registrations as the results r not yet out..
DO you know tht according to law the universities need to publish results within 45 days frm the last exam? .. or else they can be taken to task..and an year of education backward claim is a serious issue in court.. will get the university advocates running up n down the court stairs..

      Comment by Zafrin! — January 6, 2009 @ 6:28 pm

    18. Hey Zafrin!,

Thanks for that piece of advise.. Apparently, suing the university is the only way to get results on time these days.

I’m thinking of doing the same.. High time their lawyers did some running !!

    21. Well… What we say here as mere individuals are of no use rather than just letting everyone ‘know’ wht s actually happening. But what we can ‘do’ as a union in real is wht we should concern bout seriously! Its not of somethin to be jus said for, its of our direct actions in real. We have the legal rights to act over our universitie’s bad act! Tc all.

    25. Dont blame University if you have a “sit watching TV and earn a degree” attitude. Nobody who can pursue right contacts here have returned empty handed and it is becoz of your own idle nature. Regarding Mohanlal, he is the most fucking asshole in malayalam cinema !!!!

      Comment by Ajith — July 13, 2010 @ 4:09 pm

    26. @Ajith & John, This how you fill your answer papers.

When I was a student, i thought MG is the worst uni, because of the terrible marklist I had, even being one of the best student at college. Okay, okay I understand Indian university got unity to shit the student lifes. All what they know is to make trade unions and fight for their (own) rights.

    30. Hey..I am first year Btech student under MGU
And the experience till now is overwhelming..school was much better even the subjects were denser and rushed through..There werent as many formalities as in here ..I dont even know if I will pass my subjects..If that werent something to worry about ..there are the stupid workshop exams..
I think the whole system needs to be refurnished ..ALl the formalities such records and even lectures should be done with ….Students should directly “jump” into a subject experiencing it ..enticing interest passion and thrills….Studying should be done at the college itself …and not at homes like we are now..
