Trade Union in the IT industry

Trade Union in the IT industry

Recent lay offs in the IT industry brought back this topic to the lime light again. The political parties are using this opportunity to crack into the IT industry. But do we really need a trade union in the IT industry ?

If we take a look at the recent protests in front of the IT parks by the communists, the BJP and their feeder organizations, we will understand that those people don’t even have a clue as to what the IT industry is all about. All they speak is a misinterpreted version of the IT industry. Do we want those pseudo leaders to lead us ?

Think about Trade Union flags in front of our IT parks. How intimidating that situation will be to a client coming from the west. Will someone give work to a company knowing that the trade union might stop work any time for even the silliest reasons. We already have such a bad image across the world. Kerala is notorious for its trade unions.

Finally there is a positive side to having trade unions. They help preserve the greenery of Kerala.

“those people don’t even have a clue as to what the IT industry is all about.” this is exactly what I wrote in my blog http://sonyvellayani.blogspot.com/2008/11/kerala-government-and-news-media-out-of.html

The techies need to understand something about their job. They enjoy huge pay scales and jump jobs as they wish for an even higher pay scale. All well and good. But they should also be ready to take the up and downs in the industry as well. No use of crying fowl when you lose your job as a result of global economy slowdown. The situation right now should also remind them the need of good savings.

Trade unions are trying to intrude into the industry using the situation and I don’t think it will do any good for us.

Unions are a bad idea. Employees should be able to retain job/gain another job with their skills and performance and not with the backing of Unions muscle power.

    One should command, not demand

I may be good if there is an union to talk on behalf of employees, to protest against managements negative attitude if any. But it should not be under control of cheap politics. None of the politicians ( i don’t know we can call current leaders a politicians ) knows nothing about the backbone IT industry and don’t know how important time, commitments, uptime etc in this industry. What they can do only is ask their union member to strike against managment.
And I didn’t saw any political parties actively involved to anything on economic crisis even just to conduct an open discussion , why they need to play only with IT industry issues.

Infact, the very context of unions are misintrepreted in Kerala. We must understands, unions are formed not only for collective bargaining, but collective efforts and actions. It also include collective upgradation of skills, collective welfare, collective and co-operative work culture etc. But in Kerala, unions are meant ONLY FOR SAFEGUARDING THEIR RIGHTS AND CREATION OF ADDITIONAL RIGHTS. I don’t think, there is any union, here meant to increase the value of human labour and its upgradation.

Unionism in IT is nothing bad, as there are many injustice happening. Forget abt the companies like Wipro or Infosys, which have a huge HR System and legacy to maintain worker welfare. Whereas many small companies, which are majority, doesn’t have proper HR Dept and HR related services. Many consider HR mere Payroll division as well as HIRE AND FIRE Division.

Unions could improvise this area, provided, they form on company to company basis, WITH NO INCLINATION TO ANY EXTERNAL POLITICS and POILITICAL AGENDAS. And it should be meant to increase joint welfare and sense of collective work efforts, to improve team spirits.

What I suggest, is Companies must encourage employees to form an internal club, where they can discuss and solve their internal problems and avoiding all company related hierarchies and communication machinery. This could seal off the entry of parties into campus, but maintaining the needs. Correct training and able leadership can make lot of difference, just like what we see in Japan or Bhutan etc

    With regards
    Arun
