IEEE Projects and Poor Engineering Students

Today my cousin who is a final year engineering student in a well reputed college in central Kerala came upto me and asked whether I had an IEEE membership. Instantly I understood her need cos i have been hearing the same question from many, she needed a project for her final semester and her teachers would allow only IEEE projects.

Now whats with this IEEE criteria ? There are many engineering colleges in Kerala who set this stupid IEEE criteria. Now how many of those staff members can actually guide the student through an IEEE project ? How many of them even understand the synopsis of an IEEE project ? Ive been wrestling with computers for over 12 years now and most of those IEEE stuff is still Greek to me.

I suggested her that she do a Voip implementation using the open source telephony framework asterisk. Its something that I can help her with, and also its some skill thats in huge demand. But she said, another Voip project got rejected and this wont be approved. How crappy… a project getting rejected just because it has a familiar word “Voip”. The situation is no different with academic seminar.

Let us be very practical here. Will the 4 year good for nothing syllabus make the student capable of doing an IEEE project. All these students are going to join some project institution and buy a project. Whats the point in forcing them to do the so called IEEE project.

In my opinion we should let them do something that can do on their own within the limited time period. Even if its a simple project, doing on your own is far far better than going to an institute and getting a ready made “IEEE” project.

Im with you ken , its because one can be more productive and creative if one does a project or activity ofinterest .. this i would say its been forced to take up projects of teachers interest .. and doing an IEEE project is an good exposure ,well if the syllabus isnt that good why dont they let us learn by ourself ..

Please mention the name of the college also. I want to know about that college!

Ask your cousin to give some blah blah IEEE number and then do the project which she is interested in. Those teachers won’t have even heard of anything.

I had faced the same problem when i was in my Final Year too. My project intially got rejected because of the “same name issue”. So guess what i did….

    I changed the name.

It was intially called Wireless GPS system software (or something like that) … then we just named it as HOTSPOT…
    and it worked…
(Though the InCharge did find out in the end that it was the same thing.)

    And a about the IEEE….

First : they ask you to do IEEE Project…

Second : the InCharge comes and says you should do something Different and Innovative

Third : U ask them anything and the say search the net or will fill you with Crap.

It’s like thinking in a Box..
Working in Boundries, limits your thinking…. .

How far can we go ???

When i was in the last semester, ther was a common IEEE password for everyone(later some one changed it) ..Teachers insisted on us to get topics from IEEE website and others wer rejected!! . The same goes with the selection of seminar topic…
I think some one given “kaivisham” for them in IEEE

If students are permitted to do something within their limit they at least make a try and sometimes come up with revolutionary ideas. Otherwise, they will outsource it and it is again ‘project labourers’ money. Since, there is no mechanism to know whether the project is done by them or not why all these nonsense.????

My classmates also faced a trouble getting projects approved. ‘IEEE’ ones are needed by staff.. And some year..some guys did a project in mobile…so it wont be allowed…..some guys did some project in security…so no project will be allowed in security!! so is the case with seminars too!!

    Damn stupid system….

    1. The colleges should not force. IEEE papers contain research time projects, so not all can/will be interested to implement it.

2.If one have an application software as your project idea, then he/she might face problem as there may not be an IEEE paper for it.

3.Students should not in any case complain about the staff quality. Have to take it up as a challenge to complete the project and learn something out of it.

    My Suggestion would be
Do whatever project you like to do. But dont expect it to be accepted as your final year project.

    u r right
At present iam doing my final yr btech
Our hod forced us to do only ieee papers as a project
By some how we sellected a project called image transcoding which will transcode the images on the fly.
But it was rejected becoz it was published in 2001
Now iam searching for a recent paper
How a btech student can reach the ieee standard without having any previous experience

i am working in an institute doing engineering projects. i agree with the posts. The staffs most of them are these days fresh candidates and they dont know anything about ieee domains. for these staffs i am asking one question … will you teach the students with the kind of stuff that they can do ieee projects.first of all these staffs has to implement any ieee papers in their own in programming languages.
