Manorama Strikes Again with Kinky Bluetooth Stories

    Author: Kenney Jacob

Hi, I am Kenney Jacob, love blogging about Education, Media hypocrisy and Social Issues.

Malayala Manorama, the most popular Malayalam Daily is back with another bluetooth story. This time its even more disgusting and technically incorrect.

Now before I go into the details of the article, I just want to make a point. Internet and Mobile Phone are not bad technologies. People might misuse it, its a fact. But people are also misusing the print medium. PlayBoy, Penthhouse, Debonair etc are pure examples of the print medium being misused. I didnt see Manorama or any other print medium protesting with captions like “blue print” just like they try to brand bluetooth as “Blue Truth”.

Take a look at their logo.

I must admire their graphics guy. A mouse moving over the outline image of a women. Perfect. Why not try and publish this in your own publication “The Man”.

Now the kinky stories about internet and mobile phones follow. Just look at the care given to the details. A movie script writer if sees this will come and join Manorama to learn this art. And we must not forget that these are experts who can write Kargil war descriptions, and sexy spy stories sitting in their cabins in Kottayam Manorama office.

This is what I call psuedo porn. Also take a look at the title. Brilliant…. right ? Poor Bluetooth.

Looks like someone has subscribed to the FSI blog.

Nice name “Diana” and the blame goes to the internet (firewalled ) ;)

    Prisoner of bluetooth ?

There is a mention about the Manorama Vision Sting operation Camera team in the article, who once setout to prove that girls cant travel freely in buses and after 10PM.

So much for the emotional kinky bullshit. Let come to the technical aspects of the report. Read the following.

This is total nonsense. This is technical bullshit. But I wanted to be 100% sure, so I asked my friend Ajeesh to take a look at it and comment. He has been working on bluetooth for the last 3 years. And this is what he commented about the article.

I just went through the article. Most of the tech info in this article are false.I really dont think that some one can access your cell phone using their mobile bluetooth(i dont believe) and even i dont think that there is some device available to hack the bluetooth communication.

The simplest bluetooth connection is using Obex Push profile, and in this case also, client should accept the connection, otherwise we cant access client device.

In this article they are saying about bluetooth file transfer, which is possible only if both the devices are paired.

In file transfer, both connection uses a shared link and the link has a particular link key and link policy. Only those devices can know the link key and connection took place after providing a 16 digit pin number. Even bluetooth works using frequency hoping mechanism.

I didnt even heard about such a bullshit before. I downloaded some software which can be installed on mobile phones. They said that using this software we can hack into other mobile phones.. I tried it in my mobile phone.. no luck..

So we can conclude that around 99% of the tech information in this article is fake.. I think manorama has some allergic problem with new technologies like bluetooth, camera phones etc. Some people might be misusing it, no one can stop it. But bluetooth is a secure mechanism. To hack bluetooth, they surely need its developers help.. :) !!!

Now I have full faith in our cyber forensics department.

    1. I have only 1 question, How those reporters came to know about the stories??..They use to visit the porn sites and watch Youtube videos na??…But kenney, i was successful in hacking phones with lower security by using a software called super bluetooth hack ,well that was for fun:-). Is that the security flaw they have mentioned in the news??

    4. Nope..checktodays MM (Kochi Edition). The news is there on the frontpage!….and article seems to be credited to 4-5 reporters who they claim have researched this.
They are just taking advantage of the “Blue” in BlueTooth and linking it to the mallus already-inbuilt curiosity of the word in bluefilm and stuff like that…otherwise what has a connectivity protocol do with this. anyone can do the same with a MMS enabled Mobile Fone with a Mobile camera..and if the Mobile has a data cable that also does the same functionality.

Imagine what will MM write if the supercomputer BlueGene is introduced in Kerala …” asleela supercomputer keralathil ! :)
and i am sure it will be on the Frontpage

Basically MM is a group of yesteryear shit people who take the daily as a Business! ….maybe they had genuineness in the past..but now they sell ! news .

Sad is the fact that some old timers (Include my Dad in this ;) ) still blindly believe what they write out

I must say the Government must lay a check on this attitude..because since a news paper is read my many ..projecting false information about a technology may even hinder our nations technological progress . If i ask my father ..can i go and do a project in “Blue”-tooth …well his answer will be a Big NO…

Kenneychaa..may be we should write a OpenLetter to the Fucker ChiefEditor of MM … :) . I wonder if his Mobile Phone is Bluetooth enabled?..now even entry level phones have this feature

    6. I knew you would respond to this Kenney, and was waiting to have my comments on it.

This is the best example for SENSATIONALIZATION done by MEDIA.
The language used in that feature resembles like a porn magazine. (I havent read any, but, surely, it doesnt suit a *reputed* newspaper style).

They’ve even used the slang word for blue-films and all in the report. Aaarghh!!!

As Anoop pointed out, the problem lies in all the people above 30 are likely to believe everything literally. They don’t know what is BlueTooth, YouTube and all, and they seem to believe what is said by their much reputed, most professional (news?)paper.

Now, if we send MM a mail or something pointing about the faults, they’ll solely put us into the category of perverts.

They’ve succeeded in creating a MEDIA EMPIRE, which they use for their selfish promotion and idea-propagation. Only a bethel, value-oriented MEDIA EMPIRE run by us, could stop them being considered as the invincible.

Now, if we are to start out something like that, we are sure to face many practical constraints, Capital being the foremost, then commercialization etc..

Now, regarding this totally-pointless and terribly-sensationalized *investigatory report* by Manorama:: We need to propagate the thoughts we’ve discussed here to more and more people, for which, sadly there exists no platform. !!

May be, this blog and our comments could shape up the coming generation, of which, me too is a part. :)

    8. No wonder my mom’s totally against me buying a ‘bluetooth’ enabled phone! :|

Someone must sue Manorama! True, stuff like this happens, but writing technological bullshit like this will only add to the paranoia instead of solving the problem.

Lay people who read this get the feeling that bluetooth is solely for the transfer of blue films!! And it’s not just manorama, almost every big regional newspaper is making a momentous mountain out of the molehill!

    15. Kenny,

It appears that Manorama is not responsible for what is published in it. On july 3rd, Metro Manorama had published an article on ‘Induction cooker’. The article says that the food items placed on an Induction cooker is heated and cooked without heating the vessel it holds . This is absolutely wrong. Working principles of an Induction cooker is clearly described here. The vessel gets heated first and then the matter inside gets heated because of the heat of the vessel.

Unfortunately, Metro Manorama it its article cited claims that a great advantage of Induction cooker is that we can cook without heating the vessel. What to say. If interested please read my post herehttp://upabhokthavu.blogspot.com/2008/07/induction-cooker.html

    20. Manorama presented a bundle of stupidity in these articles. the reporters seems total ignorant about the mobile or mobile technologies including bluetooth.

Manorama is always behind the BLUE stories, as kenney mentioned earlier in some other posts, look in to their weekly. the illustrations in thats the most ugliest of its kind. gals are represented with extra ordinary b*TTS and B**bs.. it seems that all manorama’s lady characters are made up of only these two organs.

Any technology can be misused, but when you compare it with the percentage of people using it for such activities, you can realize that its only a very negligible percentage. they are pretending as moral police and making comments which emotionally influance the people. in result they are making others think in terms of BLUE.

They could have at least review it before publishing. This is the height of stupidity.

Its like saying, your email can be hacked, if someones looking at the keyboard when you type, or your phone can ba tapped easily, or even 1000Rs tiny wireless cams are available, which can monitor your room without even you noticing it.

I had a fair share of bluetooth hacking attempts. Its possible if you have physical access to the device you are trying to hack.(now if you have physical access, then it cant be called hacking)
Unless there is absolutely no way of hacking into our mobiles.

BTW how many of us have our bluetooth turned on ?

      @abdhuraheemk
Ok agreed. You got some warnings. Now what are you going to do ? Ban mobile phones and internet ? Wear a pardha when you go outside ?

      @Ubaid
Buddy, we all are jokers in one way or the other. And you just now became a small joker by asking me whether I am also a part of bluetooth sex racket. (If something like that exists)

    22. This is an yellow news paper. Since they posses a strong hold of money and muscle power(Politics)., And Since because the entire authority of India in newsprint is loyal to them, we are helpless. Since the politics and its corruption is favouring them to add more guts to the article. Since education is manipulated by both media and Politics. Since, these 3, media, Politics, education are messed up here, Every human with common sense is insulted here. Every Indian citizen is exploited here by media and political power. as a new educated students coming out from barracks(schools) and believing what they have learned is right, A new generation is also exploited. We are helpless. We can’t stop manorama ruining our lives. Only because there are no provisions for that. Can we vote, or can we make a complain in the Court…? nothing will work. They will teach you 1>2+3+4 showing pride in destroying the intellectuality of the people here.

I have lost my trust in this system. you wont be knowing that until you get into the hit list of media and politics.

If you are trusting the same system protecting this media, if you believe you have the right to speak. you have to believe that there is no right to act. You are in the same cage where the British left you, this time in a painted one.

    24. The wrong technical details should certainly be avoided at all cost by a newspaper with so much reputation because most people do believe what they read in papers.

But their aim in letting people know that such crimes do happen is good I guess. There are some people who do believe that using internet and computers is very high tech and is something related to studies. I must admit my parents too thought like that when I used internet. But I used to go to orkut or yahoo messenger etc. These news at least makes them conscious that such things can happen. And I heard some parents took mobiles from their daughters after watching the movie “Veruthe Oru Bharya”. So good intensions are not always enough.

I think,Age or sex is not a matter to spread this things shared thru bluetooth or mail across their friend circle. They never think that tomorrow the same may be happens their own family or loved ones.

I am a father who had full trust in my son when I gave him access to internet from our home PC, when he was a student. I have found that nothing adverse has haapened for that.

Trust the technology and your children.

Forget about the MM class of journalism – they are simply spewing venom into our minds. Let us tell them unitedly that their henious attempts cannot derail the minds of our young generation.

Also we shoukld take note that they are doing the same to venomize our political, cultural and intellectual spaces.

    31. Good one.

Its like saying, don’t put windows when you construct house, people can peep through it :-) It depends on whose house it is and how we keep it, really.

I am sure, a few articles like this will make enough prejudice at least in the older generation. As for Internet, there used to be a time when Internet cafes were hang outs of only “payyans”, what they are doing there, anyone didn’t know. I used to get scares and glares when I went to check my mail, being a girl with conservative looks and dress, in a cafe in a conservative Muslim area.
I was lucky that my dad understood its scope, and came with me at times with genuine curiosity of learning it.

    34. Hai Guys and Gals,

Some people seems too eager to criticise manorama (No even I am not a great fan of them).

I am writing this comment to inform that there are ways to get data from a phone using bluetooth technology. Even there are some viruses that gets transferred between phones using bluetooth.

The process is simple, a person (lets call him ‘Hacker’) sends a file using bluetooth and most users (atleast some) wont care to read what is displayed and pressed the accept button. In this way the connection is established. The Hacker would have sent some application in some cute names (like picture of Aishwarya). Again most users (ager to see Aishwarya’s) photo, install the received application.

This installed application can then get control of several bugs in the phone device and could compromise it.

This process is theoretically possible and affects mainly smart phones.

So please do try to find the truth before we criticise someone.

      Thanks.
      Anil

      Comment by Anil — January 5, 2010 @ 9:59 am

    35. Anil,

Its not that I am too eager to crticize manorama, its just that they give me too many opportunities to do that. I try my level best not to read their prints, but some times their headlines are sooooo attractive.. soo tempting that you cant resist reading…

And about bluetooth… if you let a trojan into your phone, then anything is possible, its like letting a thief stay with you.

My point is that, all the sexual stories they have published are not caused due to bluetooth, its us who is the problem.

Why are they blaming mobile phones so much ? Why are they soooo against the internet… are they afraid of a day when the print will die ???
