I had always thought of Sree Narayana Guru as a local leader and someone who belonged only to the Ezhavas. Atleast that was the image I was supposed to have about him by the SNDP and its leaders. But it all changed when I met with R Sukumar who is now making a movie about Sree Narayana Guru.
We always tend to underestimate anyone who is close to us. We thing of Nelson Mandela as a great person. Gandhiji gave us independence. Martin Luther King is a legend. But I never knew that this local guru, whose followers I grew up with, is a man who has more impact on the life that I live now than any other leader.
Its really sad to see this great person locked in a mirror cage, dragged into every political controversy, used to divide the very own people he fought for and used as a symbol of something he preached to abolish.
After having a 2 hour chat with the R Sukumar, the director of YugaPurushan, all my views about the guru and the SNDP changed forever. The man has been doing research for the last 15 years for this movie with total dedication, just for this movie. I can now say with total conviction that this man knows more about the guru than any other historian or so called SNDP leaders.
The movie which is expected to start shooting by the end of this year will tell an insiring tale of how this one person created history and changed the lives of million forever. The entire preproduction work for the movie is complete with a storyboard that consists of over 2000 hand drawn images.
Lets wait for the movie….

Narayana guru is a world class person on the same level as Buddha and Jesus Christ. Though Guru is hailed as a social reformer in Kerala, unfortunately in recent times (esp. since 1947) he has been thought of more and more as a low-caste reformer … SNDP and others screwed up the image. Reformation process took a beating.
But people abroad – Malayalees especially – have redsicovered guru. As Daniel McKibben put it ‘guru is a combination of Martin Luther and Martin Luther King in the same person’.
Guru is beyond all religion and caste prejudices. guru realized the meaningless of religious dogmas, caste, rituals etc.
It is nice that the ideals are brought forward – in Kerala where nopotism and mafia are ruling the state!

Hi Mr Jacob,
Glad to read your comments on Narayana Guru. As you can read at our site on Guru (http://www.freewebs.com/guruforum), Narayana Guru was far ahead of his times. He was a very practical man.. An ‘abnormal’ religious leader (if one may call him so). Guru was learned in Sanskrit, Malayalam and Tamil (unlike some of the uneducated pseudo gurus of today). Guru never wore saffron clothes in his life execpt on one occasion of his trip to Sri Lanka (upon insistence from organizers).
Guru called for reformation among all people of Kerala.. especially the downtrodden. He never spread hatred ..his methods were 100% positive. Guru stood for human liberty. Called for education. In fact, guru called for English education and was instrumental in sending Mahakavi Kumaran Asan to outside Kerala.
Guru opposed all religious dogmas, superstitions and rituals. His temples were for asserting the right to worship and a place for people to gather.
The current followers and many in SNDP are spoiling everything! This is a sad spectacle. But internet is coming as a blessing here.
Comments like the one you have made speaks for itself.
We appreciate your comments. Well said.
Hope you will find time to our website.
