The above is a forwarded email that I got a few days ago. For my non Malayalam readers, a transalation/adaptation can be found here.
Unnikuttan ask his grandfather, who is reading the newspaper and sipping a cup of tea.
“Grandpa, What is this nuclear deal”
Grandpa replies
“I am not very sure son, but I can say one thing for sure, its something that will benefit our country. “
Unnikuttan asks in doubtful tone
“How can you be sure”
Grandpa replies
“All the left parties are against the deal. So I am sure that Its somehting beneficial to the country.”

I think this short story summarises what most Indians feel about the the lefts stance on the nuclear issue.
I do feel the need to add here that it is unfortunate that it has become a fashion to rebuke the left on every issue that they protest about. This is wrong! but then perhaps the left should start doing something constructive other than protest?
Ducks - quack
Lamb - bleat
Al Qaida - bomb
Left/Communists - Protest

There is a lot of confusion regarding this deal in my mind…..i hv read articles with contrasting viewpoints .There is a section of eminent scientists who oppose the deal and another section which support the deal….though i would like to believe that the nuclear deal is good for the country, i find that there is a lack of conviction in my thought…..so guys, is this deal really good…..can u provide me with some hard facts….??

Just like most of my Indian brothers and sisters - I have no Idea on what this Nuclear Deal is. Now…now…The Government is not really doing anything to make the general public aware of this deal - and the Left parties are creating such a big rumble (they do it for anything and everything) - now this is creating serious doubts in my mind….
But on a general note - it is high time the Left parties stop crying and start doing something more fruitful…
July 29th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
The fact is no one knows anything about the nuclear deal.
The general public ought to know about something as important as this.
The govt. has clearly failed to do anything on this regard, so all that the public knows is ” since the lefts oppose the deal it’s gotta be good for the country ”
But the fact is it’s really hard for us to pass an opinion since we know nothing about the deal………

Some thing similar to what JMJ mentioned, its the problem of unawareness the cause of all these protests and bye-elections.
It is calculated in many blogs and discussions that only 3% of the actual power will India be getting by Nuclear treaty. Also USA is very interested as India is going to reveal all the hidden / secret / most powerful experiments to them or in another words to the Nuclear treaty.
Does India have to sacrifice such a success just for 3% (which may rise up to 30%, only in words).
What India face is the unavailability of Nuclear fuel, which is banned by USA stating unsafe measurements. The unavailability of nuclear fuel is now leading to shut down of our reactors and experiments.
USA will release the ban after this treaty, how weird!!!!
Once the treaty is signed, we may start getting second hand fuel supplied, but were will the waste after usage be disposed?? In the ocean?? On the land???
Nuclear wastes are also highly radio active, which means waste is also a threat to human, which will become another reason for protest.
What India can do now i to spend more on the current available resources until some friendly treaties that will have more benefit, comes. After all we are still not using all our available (Inhouse) resources like water, tide, wind, thermal etc.
How can nuclear power be termed as power of future when nuclear fuel is non-renewable???
I doubt if i have missed any points!!

Ivide ulla ezhuthu-karellam congress thaaney ?
Oru kutti sakhavinte comment koodi kidakkatte.
Still, I agree somewhat to the comment about the blind opposition from Left to some new things.
But are you believing US more than left parties on a deal which will affect India’s future.
You see, where ever US has shown more interest, they have their reasons.
Do you think that Bush is so sad that villages in India will be in dark due to lack of electricity after some years.
To my very little knowledge, by this deal - we will have to reveal some national top secrets to others. But we are not supposed to peep US nuclear secrets.
.
.
.
I don’t want to justify left.
But please think both sides. Bush & Left .
Is “Bush” or “Left” more friendlier to INDIA ?
Is “Bush” or “Left” more concerned about the darkness in Indian villages ?

libintom

India- US Civilian Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (123 Agreement)
We have to talk about the politics about the opposition to the agreement. Both the Left Front and the NDA have been vociferously against the agreement for a long time. But let us analyze the agreement and see where the people who oppose it stand.
But before starting this discussion, let us have a look at the text of the 123 Agreement which is the India- US Civilian Nuclear Cooperation Agreement
Check the agreement yourselves at the following links
http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/90157 .pdf
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2007/aug/90050.h tm
It is a long agreement, but a careful study of the agreement would give you some insights.I am just taking some excerpts to point out a few things.
“AFFIRMING that cooperation under this Agreement is between two States possessing advanced nuclear technology, both Parties having the same benefits and advantages, both committed to preventing WMD proliferation;”
This is a major step in terms of India’s nuclear capabilities. With just this one sentence, the US is affirming that India is a nuclear sate with advanced technology. Well, maybe everybody knows that, but this is a huge since America is formally acknowledging about India’s capabilities.
“This Agreement shall be implemented in a manner so as not to hinder or otherwise interfere with any other activities involving the use of nuclear material, non-nuclear material, equipment, components, information or technology and military nuclear facilities produced, acquired or developed by them independent of this Agreement for their own purposes.”
This article along proves the bigger point. It is really clear that the agreement has no infringement on the sovereignty of India or its rights to pursue any nuclear defense program. We have seen what the agreement is not about. So what is this agreement all about? Well, it is about the following :
“Development of a strategic reserve of nuclear fuel to guard against any disruption of supply over the lifetime of India’s reactors;
Advanced research and development in nuclear sciences including but not limited to biological research, medicine, agriculture and industry, environment and climate change;
Supply between the Parties, whether for use by or for the benefit of the Parties or third countries, of nuclear material, equipment;”
So in effect, the agreement only applies to the peaceful use of nuclear technology. The second excerpt clearly states that military and other aspects are to be done as whatever India wants. Let me explore what this means for India.
A sure supply of nuclear material, technology and equipment for all our energy needs. This is critically important to India’s future as an emerging world super power. Trust me, whatever the leaders say, there is a big competition between India and China. India is leading in terms of quality human capital but China is way ahead of us in terms of infrastructure. We need better transportation system and bucketfuls of energy supplies in long term. We are tapping all available sources, but a dwindling global oil supply and steep growth of the Indian economy has led to an imbalance between the supply and demand of energy here. However, in case of China, they have a steady supply of nuclear fuel in a long term. They have a clear path for growth as a big guy out here.
So, when NDA and its allies are against the UPA in terms of the agreement, it can be only because of two reasons. Either
a) They didn’t read the agreement or
b) They do not want UPA to bring about this huge success for our country.
So, the opposition parties are ready to sacrifice the country’s interest for political reasons. I’m pretty sure that what they wanted was to get the government to fail and maybe get back into power and sign the same agreement and claim credit for it.

However, there is something more egregious to the CPM’s opposition to the agreement. They are the people who sided with China during the Indo-China war. So this is a very heavy betrayal of the country when CPM is sacrificing our country’s interests to help aid the growth of China. The communist party is communist first and Indian next. They are out to destroy the prospects of the growth of India. People should recognize this and shun their views. UPA and Congress and allies should make special efforts for making their hypocrisy and betrayal known to the general public.

@Issac
Do you know a treaty or organization called UN (United Nations)??
Have you read the full treaty/functions/terms and conditions of UN? If you get a chance to read, do it, because UN have many good wills and terms which nuclear treaty have mentioned. Like no restrictions, its a united decision maker bla bla bla…
Now whats happening in the petroleum rich countries??? Is US, ooops UN playing a foul game or what?
It would have been so easy, easier than we think, to stop the crisis in the gulf area if UN was so called a real United Nations Organization. US is the back bone, they have the power, they created it after all. Remember one more thing, before the birth of UNO there was a similar organization called League of Nations which was a key reason for 2nd world war.
And we should realise that the nuclear treaty was also created and termed by US for their benefit.
One eg for US over power was the execution of Saddam. Where was UN at that time?? Why was Saddam executed?? Why was he executed at the presence of white people only?? Where was the UN council at that time?
What ever the treaty says, things working behind is a single country and some commission agents like allies. So this nuclear treaty is also going to be a prime source of energy for this US and a minute gift for the production country,ie India.
No matter Left support of protest, certain things have to be sensed beyond what is happening (I guess so ;-))

Left never had their brains in the right place.
@ Issac
You have given a good explanation of the deal. I think even the NDA in power would have done the same thing.
@ SAF
We are currently producing 3% and this will help to increase more. And with the abundance of thorium in India, this will make us a Nuclear Fuel supplier too in the future.
India is not compromising with the security because we are not going to expose the nuclear reactors used for defense purposes.
And above all we need not sign the NPT, which will help us from lot of sanctions.

@SAF
What is your point? I was talking about what the nuclear deal is, and gave you the link to the text of the agreement.
And I disproved the claims that the opposing parties were making.
I read your post like three times. Doesn’t make any sense. Maybe I have to go back to grade school.
Anyway you should read the agreement carefully. Be on the know. Be a good citizen.

I have read your links for a previous blog a month ago.
And its so sad to hear that you did not pick up my post, but what I meant was the foul play of USA the country. And have nt you heard about UN or League of Nations or 2nd world war or the cause of 2nd world war? relation of 2nd world war with the grand father of UN(LoN)? There is nothing else I have written in that.
One simple question, once we start getting the reactive Thorium 235/238 for our purpose and that too from leased lines, how can we be a supplier ever in the future?
The treaty says a lot with the open operation than the closed experiments that India have so far conducted.
I personally dont agree with the treaty or its terms and conditions for the reason that all these are benefiting more to US(remember they dont simply put things in to practice without any piece of benefit for them). If no could you please clarify my this point please? Coz I am stuck here.
The 3% benefit is a waste of 97%, do we have to sacrifice this way? Why is nt there any other treaty about nuclear reactors and tests on nuclear reactions???
