Hi, I am Kenney Jacob, love blogging about Education, Media hypocrisy and Social Issues.

Today our high court produced a verdict supporting the dismissal of a college student. I find the whole issue a bit intimidating as well as amusing. The girl was dismissed because she did a solo protest with a placard in front of the principals office.

I am not sure whether commenting about this qualifies as contempt of court, so here is the disclaimer. – “I totally respect the court and the judges and I have no intention to disrespect them”.

Can someone be dismissed from an educational institution just because he/she protested against something ?

Are we trying to make our institutions some sort of jail ? Ban the internet, ban the mobile phone, ban this… ban that….. ban ban ban….. where are we going with such restrictions ?

In my college there was a time when there was ‘0′ law and order. Seniors would come and beat you up for no reason, take away all your money and when you raise a complaint, the college authorities would come forward to save the “future” of the offenders. There were many incidents where students fought among themselves using stones and iron rods and many injured. But no action was taken.

News reports say that – “The Bench repeatedly asked Indulekha whether she was willing to express regret for whatever had happened in the college. The Bench said the attitude of the appellant right from the beginning of her so called struggle till it culminated in the disciplinary action against her, had been “one of defiance, to say the least.”

Can we ever ask Gandhiji to express regret for his protests against the British ?  Or is it because she is a single student who can be pushed around by anyone ? The use of the term “Defiance” confirms it. Does this dismissal and court verdict suggest that majority can do anything and get away with it ? Will the same college ban every student who goes on a strike and will the same court support it too?

    1. Press media failed to report in full the history of the case, or the verdict of the court. In the absence of the details of the case, I am unable to comment on this.

The press report as such is definitely misleading.

    2. Well what was the actual reason for the protest of the girl?

    3. The reports are not very clear, she protested for denying permission to conduct college day or something like that. Anyway its not serious and her protest was a silent one and defenitly did not deserve dismissal.

Its clearly an act of terrorism, and simply conveys the message that never protest alone. Even the court stood by the management and used the word “defiance” to attribute the students response. It was really shameful from the courts part to ask her to apologize for having protested silently.

      Might is Right !!!!!!
      Never protest alone !!!!

    7. “show me the animal and i’ll tell you the rule” .. I’m sure rules for individuals will be different from organised student groups, and the courts and colleges would turn a blind eye to all the nonsense happening in the name of student politics..

    12. Hi
It is really a problem when people are even banned from protesting against something. It really is a dangerous trend in our society. But this was also brought about by the politicians who have overdone protests to an untolerable level. So who is to be blamed.
