Until now it was the colleges who were after banning mobiles phones from campuses. Now it looks like the Kerala Government is bend upon banning mobile phones in schools and colleges. The claimed reason being the misuse of phones by children.
What ever the government or the principals say about children using mobile phone, one thing is sure. No child can misuse a mobile to a greater extent than an adult can misuse it. Will this ban be effective for teachers also. I know quite a few teachers who are “misusing” their mobiles.
Media reports about the ban quote a principal who said that the daily routines of the children are affected by using mobiles phones. I wonder what routine he is referring to. Is it
- Writing Impositions to satisfy teachers ego.
- Stupid copy writing (i did that for 10 years and still my hand writing is pathetic)
- Trying to remember a few dates and names for the sake of history
- Learning what kind of soil is there in the northern region of Bihar
- Doing some creepy arithmetic without calculators
The biggest argument against giving phones to children is an mms clip showing an intimate moment of a school girl and boy. Hey…… thats just one clip. There are thousands of other clips shot by adults. Shouldn’t we be considering a ban on adults using mobile phone considering the fact that they are misusing it more.
What does this ban tell the younger ones ?
Does it convey the message that its ok to misuse mobile phones when one becomes an adult ? Why do we certify certain movies as adults only ? Does a wrong become a right when someone crosses 18 yrs of life.
Why are we always after the kids. They dont invent crime. We teach them crime. Its us who needs a change and not the school kids.

“They dont invent crime. We teach them crime. Its us who needs a change and not the school kids.”
I stand behind this 100%
I see you still take a firm stand against not being able to to a few basic math in your head.
You have to admit its a useful skill to have; one that western-educated kids sorely lack.
I agree with you on the stupid copy-writing and lame impositions. My handwriting still sucks so bad that the credit card officer rejected my application form. (Apparently, none of my 8 signatures looked like they came from the same person :D)
I happened to develop a love for history in my late teens. I still dont give a rats ass about dates. History is about much more than dates. Studying history shows us how much progress man has made (and how much is alarmingly and stubbornly embedded in the human psyche; we still make the same mistakes our cave-dwelling war-mongers made.)
@Vimal
Being able to do arithmetic in your mind is just a “nice to have” skill in the present world of computers and technology.
What if the western educated kids lack those skills ? Still they are more technologically advanced than us. We havent produced a single mathematician other than ramanujan.
@Kenney: The state of basic sciences and mathematics research in India is worth another series of posts. You have to admit the environment is half the game.
The US is a superpower in technology because of ‘Fear’. Yes, you read right; ‘Fear’ of the Red Menace in Europe and elsewhere. The Cold war saw the greatest amount of Government-funded advances in science and technology. Zillions of dollars have been poured into the effort and the tradition continues. Even modern communications technologies like cellular radio, GPS, and of course the internet were born out of this research spree.
India never had the resources to do a spree like this when it has more pressing issues that the people are facing. We can count ourselves lucky that neither does Pakistan or any of our threatening neighbours. War-mongering does produce some wicked cool technology though. I’ll admit that … cool huh!
See… Knowledge of history is useful in understanding the ‘Today’.
The academic environment in ancient India was ’supposedly’ more friendly towards academics who wanted to develop the sciences and math. I certainly don’t think our people have gotten any dumber over the ages. As the economic situation improves, and people can live in welfare states like Finland, there will be less pressure to just feed the family. Research has proved that only when survival became less of a life-or-death concern, did early man develop the arts and humanities in some capacity.
Science is a weird beast though. War seems to propogate its development 10X faster.
Ah! Yet another stupid decision. Then why not ban computers cos that can “mislead” children more than mobiles - 1000s of porno sites with very obvious names aren’t difficult to find at all. Ban internet in schools and colleges? That’d be an intelligent decision. Lol.
People need to know that the internet is not just about pornography and Orkut and mobile is not just about MMS and SMS forwards.
Yeah, banning would be a foolish idea. When I was in Mangalore, the Rajiv Gandhi University banned the students as well as teachers using their mobile phones even during breaks!!
How’bout it?
Talk about common sense, yaar..
When a company bans a mobile phone at its campus, no one says anything. but when it comes to kids…everyone is on a rampage
No Sex please, we are Indians
Kids dont really need mobile phones, but since you are inclined to give it to them, WHY NOT TEACH THEM some MORALS????
I think teaching kids some basic manners are more important than ban the use of phones!!!
The bulleted portions in the post were humorous….Only time will tell whether this ban was good or not…..girls can inform their parents if they are going to be late or if there is an issue if they have a mobile phone in their bag………rather than banning as a whole, they could allow basic phones than cannot take pictures or record movies or send MMS……In the recent incident of a girl suiciding since she was strip searching looking for a mobile phone by school authorities, rather than banning the phone, they should have punished the authorities after learning the facts
mobile may cause health hazards to children and pregnant women. that is the reason for the ban. also mobiles will eat the pocket of the parents
So what ever happened to individual responsibility?
Archaic ban on mobile devices or any other technology for that matter is not the solution for any of the social evil, whether real or perceived.
First of all, you are talking about adults ‘misusing’ it. But let me tell you something, if they are using a functionality on their own phone, the are USING it. You do not have to be the one who judges what is misuse. What one does with one’s own phone is his or her own business. If it violates somebody else’s privacy or something, there is the legal system for that. A few occurrences of inappropriate conduct among millions do not justify outright banning or anything.
The same applies for kids. This is not communist China to ban everything outright. This is a free country. The individual responsibility in case of the children also extends to the parents, I would admit. But that is it, the government doesn’t have to do the parenting. We can do it ourselves.
Even the colleges have no rights to ban mobile phones from campuses. They can ask students to switch off phones in classrooms which is very much acceptable. Students are not the slaves of colleges, they are there just to get an education and learn stuff.
I totally agree with TheAnand. Instead of creating a brouhaha and baning mobile phones, each parent should teach their children some morality. That goes a long way. Bans won’t work for ever-so-adventurous kids who scoffs rules. But a strong morality will.
Every kids are learners more than creators. Every adults are learners and creators from their pasts and learners about their future. Here the difference btw an adult and kid is their experience and way of thoughts.
Any kid who have a MOBILE will try to show others first than to use it practically so will be their urge to discover things. As long as mobile is concerned, its the worst secret dangerous magic box that any kid can have. After all thats not a kids play toy.
Kids enjoy what adults do, for them its just a matter of learning new things. Why is the world moving towards a scattered edge? According to me its the scattered minds of wicked kids during those times, who got ideas from the inherited technology and lack of the knowledge about family and love bond.
Still the kids are going that scattered way. What is the combination of a scattered mind and scattered mind? Deadly pervetous. Mobile is the same kind of toy thats misleading atleast 90% of the kids, why should v let the world move for 10%?
Governments decision is perfect if they are successfully going to implement. If teachers are misusing mobiles that is punishable, but how many teachers are there of such kind? 10%?
Writing Imposition is not only for a teachers ego, it depend on the way a kid thinks why he/she is writing that imposition for.Why dont the parents tell them its for their benefit. Writing makes the brain shine 5 times more than a one time reading.
Thats prooved. Every s.w engineers have a plan session at the begining where they write things. Know that?
Copy writing, same as above, if you want to improve you can or else u are wasting your own time. Those who win are winners and others are losers.
Knowing a date?? Its history, good and bad days of our old family. Thats a good implementation to let kids/people know what was before. There is no today from the nick of time. Its yesterday that made a happy today and will depend on today the beauty of tomorrow. So why not learning history?
Knowing soil? Geography? Its not a waste at all. Knowing about a distant planet is always a knowledge. In an accident even if you loose your hands and legs, what remain untouched will be what you ate and what you learned. So its not at all a waste.
Here we are again at calculators. To invent a super computer or so called new technology, without mathematics and calculations who ever have practiced machine dependent calculations are going to fail multiple times. Ramanujan is only a single man who was known in history. Some body have to learn multiplicaiton tables just for sake of award? More you calculate the way you think will have a perfect end or else its all a miscalculation. Every technology inventors say those words. ‘Calculations’ and ‘Miscalculations’.
So try using your mind than calculators. A man without hands and legs is not gonna use calculators to math up. So why not learn things using mind???
@SAF
Your theory of the world going wicked is indeed great. But Is the world really going wicked ? On what scale are we comparing the past and the present ? We had murderers, rapists and dictators in the past also. Maybe cos of the communication technology we have today we have more access to news that makes us think that the world is going bad every day.
How did you conclude that 90% of the students are “misusing” mobiles ? On what data did you say that 90% of the teachers are not “misusing” mobiles.
The Government has not right to say who should use phones and who should not. Maybe a school can say, no phones in class rooms. But other than that its upto the kid and his parent.
We have seen college kids riding bikes irresponsibly. But is it correct to ban bikes for students ? Ban inside campus is possible, but anything beyond that is violating personal freedom.
Regarding the examples, I dont want to comment. I am writing a book.
What is a personal freedom? Its only an inbound need, not all needs are primary and are not to be freed. Criminals have a need of killing, arresting them is against their freedom, does that mean arresting is to be banned since its against human freedom?
Every of our points have a this and that sides which are right and wrong for every person who reads.
Regarding 90% and 10% issue. Even if the figure is the other way round, a single pin point needle edge is enough to burst a big blown balloon. So even 0.01% is dangerous.
If parents cant control what their kids do, only a strong force to stop the mess as a whole should be there to prevent. Thats the other word for Govt in this discussion.
Why do people use HIT very soon after they see the first coacroach? and what will be the situation with some one who wait until his count reach 1000? By the time he/she reached the count 1000, things they wanted to protect might have lost already. Thats the difference.

Who said anything about killing someone ? Its about me wanting my kid to posses a phone.
Many are killed in road accidents. What about a ban on automobiles ? How about trains too, its the most popular means of suicide.
How about banning alcohol and cigarettes which dont have any advantage at all instead of an innocent cell phone
students don,t need mobile phones students if a student has a mobile phone it is very useful for him to resorte to malpractises.
ajith from 8 c skps
@Kenney
There you are.. @Killing some one, no one has yet mentioned so far, but I mentioned it for the sake or explaining what personal freedom is. Kids misusing mobile is absolutely equal to a crime taking place. So is there any need to pre-mention about killing by any one?
Suicide is a personal freedom, does that mean it has to be promoted? Or will the ban of automobiles, poisons (pesticides, cyanide, acids, proteins…. ) be good?
Alcohol and cigarettes and now mobiles, thats the add up.
There were rapes, murders, kidnappings etc etc long long ages ago too.
But how did ramanujan learned maths? Were there calculators and mobile phones? How did rulers knew the arrival of enemies prior? Were there mobile phones and calculators to calculate and communicate? So why now?
Ill wait until someone else bring in a fresh perspective
hey guys i am 4 banning mobiles if they are killing pregnant woman. But then there are the buses and cars that kill more people. Oh i 4got about tobacco . . . .
Guys we have to accept that there is always going 2 be good and bad sides of technology.
If we adopt a knee jerk reaction to everything we might as well go back to stone age. The opposite of adopting the technology without setting up boundries is also is not acceptable.
The key is setting up the boundries. Just think what would have happen if we did not have road rules?
As 4 kids using the technology; there are higher chances of them misusing using the technology more than us adults. After all they are kids . . . If they were to know right from wrong . . . this life would not be worth living. . . how many times has the innocent face of a child brought smile on your face. . . (boys do you remember the “choo sweet” from the girls)
I have been thinking about this from the last few posts. How many times have you come across a situation where you tell a kid not to do something and the next thing that the kid does when you turn your back is exactly the same. . . The key is to make the kid the understand the consequence of their action. Some times it can be just a matter of telling the kid or some times it can be a punishment.
Banning things is in no way going to solve the problem, but will only increase the kids curiosity as to what we are hiding from them.
Giving kids mobile phones is of course up to the parents. But i think that 4 the comman good mobiles should be banned from class rooms.
