Entrance Coaching Mafia

Post Page Rank

In the last 15 years institutions have flourished in Kerala. They specialise in teaching the tips and tricks to gain a better rank. But during the years they have grown very powerful and arrogant also.

Now they are misleading the students and controling them in ways we never imagined. My cousin, studied in Brilliant (palai) and he got a rank of 600 in Kerala . We are were really happy for him cos he put in a lot of hard work and effort to achieve this. He missed many family events just to attend classes.

But everyone was surprised when he decided not to take admissions this year and repeat the exam once again next year. The Brilliant institute convinced him to repeat so that he could get into an IIT. He joined for classes again this monday.

Poor boy even deleted his orkut account to stay away from distractions and to concentrate on the studies. His friends formed a “Memorial Community” in his name. He is a victim of the “ Mafia”.

The saddest part is that the boy has got no clue about engineering or the IITs. He wants to do an MBA and start a company. I suggested that he repeat for CAT, GMAT or GRE and not for engineering cos that can get him into a better business school or even a good university abroad. But he has no idea about these exams or the opportunities. He trusts and believes in his teachers at the institute unaware of their business interests.

And when we speak of the institions we cant ignore the one lead by a semi God Man in the cultural capital of Kerala. I have never heard any of his students saying anything good about him. Every one complaints that he abuses the students and uses a lot of bad words. I think its a common trait of all God Men.

Apart from misleading students, these coaching centres decelerate the thinking power of students. Students learn tricks and short cuts to find answers. They don’t understand the theoretical principles underlying a problem. They just learn formulae by heart and apply the values to formulae to get results. Students do’t get time to read the text books - forget about extra reading.
I have personally observed the effect of this learnig style in my students. Many of them don’t know how to refer books to find answer to a problem. They are happy and contented if the teacher gives the answer directly.

There is a popular joke :
A student joined a professional college and on day one, in the class, the teacher asked him: Which school did you study? The student replied: Sir, what are the choices?

Kenney,
What all have you asked your cousin about re-entrance , his future plans, his current plan? What were his replies?
Did his answer contain supporting words about Brilliant tutors?
Its also necessary to make aware of him that, IIT and kerala engineering colleges differ in few points.
Also certain things (the facts) that we such B.Tech passouts know about should be conveyed, ie, Engineer is within himself, not a college born or depending on college. NIT is far better than IIT, what to say, your college is also not bad. All govt engg colleges are good as well.
Give him the right advice in the right way, or else, due to his bad luck if things go upside down at IIT or any where, its him along with loved ones who are gonna suffer.
With this single piece of blog I conclude that your cousin is not good for a business.
Actually what business is he gonna start? How s he gonna start? What preparation has he taken by now?other than the plan for MBA?

Even my cousin who is B.Tech passout said the same, I asked what is your plan, his answer was really disturbing.
His answer was, “I dont have to worry about anything now, because once I am in to MBA, I will automatically become a business man and will think exactly what business men think like”.

For me this was too much, kenney, please convey your points clearly to his heart than to his ears, coz he has got 2 ears and many brilliant supporting members.

Are u kidding me? Thats simply stupid! I can’t believe his parents allowed him to do that. You really need o knock some sense into that boy’s head.
Such problems are bound to happen when kids are not sure of their path. All they want to do is become rich, become a powerful somebody and they believe engineering is the way to go. They forget about the alternatives and even neglect their real strengths!

Wow.
THIS POST MUST BE DEDICATED FOR ME.

I (was) a victim of this.
I never wants to go for engg/medicine. But, in our school, everyone goes to Brilliant (Palai) and at the time of admission, Me too was joined there (without my consent).

I gone there for hardly 1 month and then I quit. And after that, all others consider me as if I’ve done something WRONG !!!

Insane Hate towards this system developed in my mind, that I even created a “Anti-Brillia**” community at Orkut.

Whenever I speak of them, I run out of my verbal control. Why the hell are they deciding a student’s future. It’s his/her free will or wish.

You might be thinking that I dont value teachers. NO. I respect them and I know that students need guidance at times. BUT, THAT DOESNT MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO SURRENDER YOURSELVES TO THEM.

Almost no one in my class know about anything other than “Engg/Medicine”. They just DONT UNDERSTAND that there’s a plethora of opportunites and space for creativity.
Many in my class could be rightly called “Amul Babies”, who doesnt even know how to go home by BUS.

I know, this comment is too long, that you might not be able to read it full. But, I needed to say that.

Thanks for giving me a chance to vent my feelings on this subject.

(Kenney, I love your blog. Every post of yours is related to my life.!!)

Kenney, You may try to convince your cuz, we all know thers no meaning in loosing an year just for getiing a higher rank! If he wanna start a business, why hes wasting his VERY VALUABLE one year with those arrogant Brilliants?? (I know they are, bcz we had a chat with its management once on a business proposal (an online course management) & I pity them bcz what they have said as a reply is “We dont know computer”…LOL! is it the way the director of an Engg.coaching institute shud answer ?) Dont they know Engg. is a high tech field??

Anyway leave that shit! What I am pointing is, as far as i know the TOP level management of Brilliant is not that of intellectual! So tell your cuz dont relay on them & ask him to make an extensive study on career management. It will be good if he can attend some career classes by eminent personals! Save him from digging his own graveyard by repeating 4 entrance again!

I think I was a student of the institution run by the god man you are referring to. He is one big ass hole and a maniac. Its true that he is successful at what he does, but like you said he has total disrespect for the student and the parent. They guy thinks that if a boy talks to a girl, she will get pregnant. Maybe he believes in the bible too much. People like him are a disgrace to the society we live in.

#7 Joel on 06.22.08 at 12:58 pm

Whaaa?? Don’t tell me… That’s insane. Wasn’t 600 enough? He could have continued and have done with his admissions. That was a bad idea of him to withdraw his score.
But, if he is confident in getting a score that could open the gates for him in IIT then there’s no problem. But it is still a risky situation…

Anyways I wish him all the best.. :)

The entrance coaching mafia, to my opinion is all because of our Malayalee community conventional wisdom, that never cross beyond Engineering and Medicine. I wonder, why all these engineers do MBA after their graduation, as most of them work totally different. My cousin brother is an Btech-civil and work as HR manager of Sherton Hotels after his MBA… I often wonder what civil engineering has do in his HR job in a service industry……..

Infact I blame 2 people, not much on coaching institute. The first would be the children/person themselves, as they should define, what they want to do and how doing that would take their future and fufill the dreams…. If not clear, atleast check what they possess within them and what they donot……

I am extremely poor in Maths and hate all Mathematical/quantative things…… I faint seeing blood or open part of body…… How can I join Engineering filled with Maths and quantative areas and Medicine where blood and pain are inseparable?

I openly said to my parents, that I AM NOT GOING FOR ENGINEERING AND MEDICINE. Initially there were some problems from my grandma’s side, but who can stop me my decision, as its my decision to study or not…. If I donot perform good in entrance, I am secured………

I feel today most of the youngsters donot have the personality to decide upon themselves……. This makes them so fragile for others to rule upon them

The 2nd caterorgy I would blame is the parents….. They either donot dare to think beyond IIMs or IITs or other so called premium institutes…… Or otherwise not beyond Medicine or Engineering….. There is a life beyond all the above…….

When I decided to quit SCMS soon after the admission and announced my decision to join at Alberts for MBA, all members of our family protested, rebelled and fought against my decision to join at Alberts…. But luckily I have my mother who always stood with me….. So I joined there…… Today I am happy that I am invited to join at a premium institute of India, as Faculty…….

So my voice is there, that its always conventional wisdom of both parents and students, that creates problems, more than coaching centres…. If both exhibits their personality and express what is there within them, surely they get the best, rather than becoming fragile to others

Remember that, always fragile gets dominated and always dominators wishes to dominate more under them….. So its all upto each onself, whether to become master of his own inner voice or slave of other voices…….

Regards
Arun

Institutions like Brilliant are just taking advantage of the general social ego - ie every parent wants to show off that his/her kid is the best.

Kerala has the highest literacy in our country - but this narrow mindedness (Be it Education, girls and boys talking to each other, politics….) of people just baffles me…

#10 JMJ on 06.23.08 at 1:07 pm

Another thing that I have noted is the craze for MBA. There is a general idea out there that an MBA degree will make people business minded and push you up in management levels.

Let me tell you something - MBA does not teach you about business - MBA only teaches you how to manage things. Be warned - “buying something for x amount and selling it for y amount and making a profit of z” is not business!!!

An MBA might help you get into management level job - but it does not guarantee you growth - what guaranties you growth is your understanding of the whole process and your contribution towards the growth of the company - via your creative ideas…

Good post. I’ve given a tip off to Desipundit. Lets see if they give some visibility to this issue…

Kenney,

There is some thing in the free market economy called personal responsibility.

Brilliant has a brilliant business model. I like them better than the Demigod because they have made it a mass market and making tons of money.

It is in their interests to keep the student for one more year so that they make more money. But it is his responsibility to make a judgment based on what he knows and what he hears from different sources, be it the Brillian tutors or his cousin or others. If he is not old enough to make such a decision, his parents can help him.

But the biggest irony is none of these. He surely has a potential to reach the IIT (Maybe) but if you seriously want to reach the IIT and needs coaching for it, you do not go to Brilliant. Come on. I agree they are good for state entrance.

So if he really wants to do it, let him get some quality coaching even if that may mean he has to go outside the state to some premium institute.

Eventhough it seems a little bit Insane it is not at all an odd thing today… I know a person who got rank 120 for Kerala Engineering Entrance, but he spent one more year and achieved IIT! I have a friend who got 600 at first chance and repeated with me at brilliant. As everyone knows about the RAnk system in brilliant (There are weekly exams and Ranklist).MY frnd whch i mentioned above became mad once he got 2nd rank!! (He was first all time) He went to his home and destroyed alll his CDs and didnt even eat food for 1 DAY!!! AT the end he got IIT.He sleeps hardly 1 hour daily!! And finally he got IIT and I asked him whats was his next step… He said he was afraid about IIT and whetehr he would be able to score good marks and from that day he began to study IIT subjects- I had no words!I said to him “JUST GO TO HELL!! and ****** “I achieved good rank and i am presently studying in a GOVT Collg in kerala.Presently I am very much happy! No tensions-Relaxed life on the other side that stupid is still sleeping half an hour daily !
I wont blame Brillant study centre or like that ,To be frank I had an enjoyable 1 year at Brilliant with some good friends also the management is also allows good freedom!

The only cause for these type of INSANES is their HOLY PARENTS!! who feed IIT TExt Books and Entrance guides(Bigger than three BIBLES!!) with their breakfast,Lunch and supper! they are the one’s who creates unnecessary fear and anxiety in children …… Gradually they gets surrendered to these thoughts! and emerges outs as IIT BABYS!!

#14 Rubin on 07.04.08 at 11:02 am

Leave the boy alone. He may think independently. If he is confident about his IIT dreams ,let it b flourished.Dont make waves against it.Always remember “Never Pain,Never Gain”.I took my entrace coaching under Brilliant 3 years ago,so I know what they are teaching and what the pressure creates.IITs are not 3rd grade institutions, but the first in India,so getting into it is really a hard one.If anyone has to gain something,he has to leave something and that is the rule of business.
But dont bother about Brilliant, the name says it all. It was my classmate who got first rank in kerala engineering entrance exams and simulataneously got a high rank(under general category) in IIT-JEE.We both were from Brilliant. Now he is in IIT Madras.
In all ways it is the decision of the student that matters, not entrance coaching instituitions or parents.

#15 pradeep kumar p.g on 07.16.08 at 3:52 pm

why you are blaming entrnce coaching centers ..they are success in their field ..personlally i know they never compel their students to re join there..i think your cosine have confident for winning IIT exam.because he knows with the one year experience with brilliant..he got such a good rank, so if he spends one more year there he may sure about coming with flying colours…in IIT exams.i know atmosphere and teachers there in brilliant are No 1 in the world…and the managers there managing the institute proffessionally ( that is really their success tequniques) i have some doubt about you …that you are part of some other coaching institutes opposing the famous Brillaiant pala……

#16 Kenney Jacob on 07.16.08 at 5:28 pm

ha ha……. ya ya Kenney Jacob = PC Thomas, your one and only rival.

Nobody can force anyone directly, but persuasion has many other ways my dear friend.

Brilliant is good at what they do, no doubt about that. But it becomes a problem when they try to fit every student into their dream !!!!!!

#17 SAF on 07.16.08 at 5:32 pm

@Pradeep Kumar p.g
From the first sentense what came to my mind was your last question to yourselves. :-) Are you working for brilliant academy?

About admins cousin, from admins words what I understood was that the guy is lost in entrance and a flying dream about a known word called MBA. It is said that the guy has not yet decided what business he is going to start or any thing about his future. In such a case, do you think this boy can decide so firmly to get in to such a decision without any outside influence? Perhaps the entrance coaching mafia so called brilliants business black magic?
