90% of students in enigineering colleges(in kerala for sure) cheat...either in university exams or in internal exams(which constitute 1/6 of a subjects total mark) in engineering colleges.
So whats the validity of marks?

i bet ya how much i hated the engineering exams. And i can still guarantee that the person with the best memory power wins. Creativity takes a back seat.

I agree that we should have more project based assessments.

If the professional educational system guaranteed a professional. Then majority of the companies could avoid the boring orientation classes.

[...] This is an opening blog after a long interval … but with a bad news …for those who are not informed this is about N-4 rule that will be soon implemented in cusat .. Well the rule goes like this .. If i have to do semester ” N ” then i must be all clear for the semester N-4 . So , What will be the consequence ?These students will be tagged year out . and they must repeat N-4th semester!!! Wow Wow oooo Do you have any Idea what would be the mental sate of that student .. horrible .. Irony is that if a student can’t clear 1 paper( remember only one, rest all clear wih 80+ marks ) due to some illness or any other godly reason … he will have to rewrite the entire set of papers those passed and not passed once again ..! and repeat the entire N-4th semester along with the semester fees ; people who are in the payment seat would be much more affected ….I don’t think this rule is really good one … bcus our way of evaluating the student is really out dated read the blog below to understand why when-the-examination-gains-more-importance-than-the-subject [...]

Quote form deepscorner:
" He suggested me to mug-up all the titles and sub-titles of the topics listed in the syllabus and then to study all the diagrams associated with them. “And that’s all you got to do, it is as simple as that”, he said that with a smile. I asked, “what about the contents that I would have to write under the titles and sub-titles”. He suggested me to fill it up with my own stories. He said, “Who is going to go through what we have written? They are only going to go through the titles and the diagrams and award marks.”

So this is the state of Indian education today. Who is to be held responsible? The students who seek the easy way out or the members of the evaluation system who are so lethargic in going through the papers properly?"

This is the main reason why the better educational institutions use a combined method of continuous evaluation and year end exams.

On the other side, examinations are the key stone to a students future. Every exam is like a hurdle, if a student cant pass the hurdle (no matter what kind of hurdle it is), he/she is really gonna face far bitter hurdles than ever. More over, student should be trained well that way, its not the tutor alone who is responsible, right from home to the playground and to the school it extends.

Take a look at what present day students lack?
Do they lack facilities? Encouragements? Public awareness? All tips and tricks?
NO is the answer!!!
But.. where have the time gone?? If the students of a decade ago could rule all these odds with pleasure and tension together, why is the pleasure lagging in the present day students??
If olden days students could manage his/her exams without much after school attentions, why is it necessary for present day students??
Is it the work load? No.. its because the time is mis-managed. So is the students mental over loads.
By whom?? That is the core of all present day worries and troubles.

Start from there, you will reach up the top node where students are/will be really students.

Exams come some where in between the root and top node. :-)

You guys should read this bolg:
http://deepscorner.blogspot.com/2007/11/why-most-of-graduates-are-termed.html

It gives you an idea of the students perspective of exams, and how they really prepare for the exams. And finally what has become of the students who try and get a job after this type of education...

Society prefers a group to an individual for any particular task. Continuous evaluation and extra project works mold a man to act inside a group while formal examinations fix a single studious.

Formal examinations are the measures for knowledge created through a long process with in a short period of mental hours (The Examination Time), while continuous evaluations are the measures of knowledge, and its implementation, we can call it - intelligence, created and measuring through a long period.

In short formal examinations are experiments on a student, and Continuous evaluations are the experiences from a student.

The situation changed recently. Just look @ new generation schools. They are no more giving importance to examination. For eg: DPEP, where the importance are into assessing the students for the entire year rather than simple examination where people with good oblivion skill can score more.
