I hope the Santhosh Madhavan Episode has cast the death spell of Swamis in Kerala. Atleast it will prevent new Swamis from entering the lucrative faith market. Lets forgive the big shots, the established ones. They are too connected, and too wealthy to face an investigation. The Babas and the Mathas are virtual Kings and Queens.
Now the entire media attention is on the Swamis. But there is another kind of faith sellers, the ones who come in Blazers and executive dresses. To see a real example check today’s Mathrubhumi, page 13, Trivandrum Edition. There is a full page Ad. Or check out GOD channel or the Miracle Channel. These guys are the modern version of our Swamis.
For the time being they appear harmless. All that they cause now is noise pollution, and defamation of the true Christian. But basically they are also into a dangerous business, the business of faith. And faith have this very small problem. It makes you vulnerable. Swamis took advantage of their followers faith. These guys are next.
They sell GOD in pieces. They sell miracles. They are the wholesale dealers of faith. Check their internal hierarchy and you will find scandals, self proclaimed Bishops, people with criminal backgrounds etc.
These guys will be the Santhosh Madhavans of the future if we dont put a check on their activities. These guys are getting huge amounts of money from outside India. We ease upon their activities because the police and the government is afraid to touch a sensitive area. Religious sentiments are a powerful excuse for all sorts of nonsense.

Well said Kenny. It is not only the guys who preach on the street, but even those who preach from pulpits of many holy churches are fakes. See the recent exposure in Sr. Abhaya murder case. There was a strong worded reaction from the church protecting the accused.
The established churches and Devaswams ( including so called clean swamis, I won’t name lest I fear for my life), are run like mafia. Take the annual accounts of any charitable hospital or institution (run by any religion ) , you will see ample evidence of tax evasion , illegal activities etc. They keep a lot of black money.
I feel that the entire spectrum of religion in Kerala is corrupt. A similar degradation of religious and political leadership in France led to the French Revolution.
Finally, I wonder where the “Kerala Yukthi Vadi Sangham” has vanished.
any kind of swamis talked well and acted cunningly to their own ends.almost all swamis are establishments!!!
in this era we have to rethink of swamis.
the false faith leads to hindrances towards liberation, mutation and genetical changes as a whole.the natural flow of humanity is deviated by these fakes, exploiting the true love, passion and faith of multitudes.
True Kenney.
As you said, these guys must be jailed.
@ vu2swx
It is not the religion - but the institution and the people running it that is corrupt.
Coming back to the topic - What kenney says is very true. What the religious institutions can do and are doing are poles apart.
Kenney, you are right. But you can’t classify all ‘Swamis’ as frauds. Infact its a shame to even call Santhosh Madhavan and co as Swami. They are criminals. No one should call them Swami. Its upto the prople to identify whats good and whats bad. But unfortunately we live in an age where people flock to temples and churches to ’see’ God. Basically its all what they think that matters. If they wish to see God in temple/church/mosque or any other person, its their fault. People should be more practical. First of all, its the society that creates such people. Identify them and destroy them.
But again as I said earlier, there are many who work for the betterment of mankind. We shouldn’t include them in this category.
I wouldn’t blame the swamis entirely… the general public is also responsible for believing in them… it’s not like the 50’s anymore….
It’s 2008….. and still people believe in these false “Swamis”.
If a guy makes dust in the air he is “god” and if he takes a rabbit out of hat he’s a magician….
Is it so easy to convince the general public…. What a kind of world do we live….
The only good side i see to the whole matter is the charitable institutions that are coming up…… though it will be shouted out loud… atleast some people are being helped out….
To me every person who tries to be different for the sake of being different is a fraud person.
Why do swamis have their typical attire ? Why cant they be like ordinary people. That change of dress is itself a sign of being fraud, cos they are trying to mimick an acception cliche.
Some people do anything for fame and money… the way is need not be right at all…
The dressing would be a way to show that they are from the same community of people who dress like this…. Kind of like politicans thier white and white, and you can confirm they are politicans….. There is no other way to tell they are a swami (no licence issued)…
And the worst part is that “it works”, people accept it…. without a question or slightest doubt………
Unless people stop supporting these false gods, more and more Santhosh Madhavan’s will emerge…
Just a few lies, a smoke trick, some setup mircales and you have a crowd of followers who are willing submit anything and everything…..
Soon this will become a career option for many…
Kenney,
You are on the right track. My Congrats first for writing this topic.
Some small opinions from my vision is here:
The main weakness of a human being is his future. If you have a well written future of yours from god, or it’s Xerox, you can live as you wish. But god did not add that task in his todo list when he prepared the duties while creating human or Adam.
Anyway, some living creatures took over that task. They found a way to read the Xerox, through hands, face, stars, even form air. And they turned out with names swamies, priest, astrologer etc.
Now in kerala, Category first or second, are swamies, got a small beat. The candle is lighted by santhosh madhavan , and ‘Sree Sree Sree’ Bhadranandha made better follow up and proven that swamees are not only can catch bhasmam from air , but can fire in air , and the location is not a matter , even police station.
A gun in hand, alerting light on car, and a suicide warning on mouth, argues that, he didn’t make any crime, to the Medias and the police officers gathered. Ironic!!!
There is a mild warning against all the swamis now, that either take an insurance or try their old age jobs, quitting the #CCDDFF colored clothes. Anyway barber shop owners can make coins these days.
Hey god , we are waiting for the next beat. Who are your next targets, Christian priests who making condiments or Astrologers. Whoever it may be, Need it fast !!!
Regards
Syth
In line with what I said in the Last post “The Biggest Media Cover Up Kerala Ever Saw” - Perception is more powerful than truth. And like many people have said here - it is more the fault of the people than these fraudsters - for believing in them and giving value to them.
It is also Ironic to note that - we who are the next generation - are discussing topics like this this and trying to recreate some value for our society (Usually it used to be the old people complaining that the new generation is going to the Dogs…)
I would like to congratulate each and every one of us who are taking part in this discussion for trying to bring more value and meaning to all our lives…
Very true JMJ. I dont believe in any of these religious doctrine.
God has given me intelligence. And If I dont use that intelligence and let myself be cheated by some others, then I will be guilty infront of GOD.
The above said sentence is for a strong believer in God, and not for the non believers.
Hey mate,
I have nothing for these people, but it just is not fair to work on a stereotype….
just because one swami is so, does not mean others are. It is essential that we check the bad ones, but in the process we have no right to intrude on the image or person of those who simply fit the stereotype..
@Jaleel
I am of the opinion that everyone who does the cliché things associated with a spiritual person is faking it. Like wearing Special clothes, doing cheap tricks, starting Ashrams, etc are trying to cheat people.
A genuine spiritual person wont do anything to project a spiritual image.
Look at Gandhiji, he was a very normal person, just like anyone of his times. He didnt do any tricks, He didnt start his work by wearing a saffron cloth.
@ Kenney. Gandhiji also had an ashram. He wore only white clothes. According to history, saffron/white clothes were used to show that they are not too carried away by worldly pleasures.
Showing cheap tricks is a very bad sign. People should not be taken away by these things. But for few people its possible. Buddhist monks can move things just by looking at them? Possible.
@Prasanth
I knew someone would raise this point. Gandhiji didnt start his public life with his half naked body. There is a touching incident that happened in his life which made him to be a half naked person.
And about Buddhist monks, Its not a super power. There are many reported incidents of such activities by normal people also. They need not be spiritual people.
As a citizen of the country, everybody is supposed to reveal the source of every penny he/she earn irrespective of the way it is spent. Then, why exemptions to human gods whose charity fund crosses the annual plan amount of our state.
A ridiculous reason often cited is that these ‘gods’ take money from rich and spend it for the poor. Even Kayamkulam Kochunni also did the same. But we consider him a thief, not a god. As per this ridiculous logic, one can print indian currency and spend it for charity.
If we consider miracles these people often demonstrate as an indication of their divine power, then gopinath muthukaad is the greatest human god of our state.
The reason, why we are seeing a explosion in such activities is cause of the money involved. Where money and power is involved, you will see Crooks and Politicians (Though I consider Politicians one of the sub-categories of Crooks, I am not sure if all our readers are aware of it)
And the most unfortunate thing is that our Laws don’t have the right wordings (read it as: our laws have too many loop holes) and our executive (the police force) is corrupt from top to bottom, and it is our Beloved politicians (see above for classification of politicians) who make the Laws.
I think rather than complaining about it, we should use it towards our advantage….I am off to buy my saffron cloths - I will need branches in different parts of India - People who are willing to join me drop me a mail…
I already have planned this. Wait for my new Avatar
Name - Nidhrananda Swamikal
Book - The Art of Sleeping
Speciality - The Sleeping Manthra
Recent Event - A 3 day long sleeping festival at Kaloor Stadium in which 1.5 lakh people slept for 3 days
I am reading the comments on the Living Gods and Godess. Love to leave my opinion but have no aim to hurt any. All those Babas and Ammas doing lots of good things and is visible to all but the bads they are handling or their past and what kind of peoples was they nobody want to know. Amma doing lots of good things but above that there is big bussinuss. How a saint or a godess can make the Education as good bussinuss. Big capitation fee, stoping of the courses in which students are not interested to put high donations. Amma is teaching all primarily want the education both education for living and for life. I wondered how to corilate these contriductory things.
I just put my thinking here please dont comes out with teeth and nail.
I dont know what is the exact post, if it is not this please send the link
Swa- Swam- Own
mi- mind.
This is what the actual transaltion of swami. Swami is not some one who just wear saffron clothing. Swami is some one who own control over his own mind. He is very neutral in thinking. He has no posessiveness to anything, if it religion, anything worldly it is.
I think u might have forgotten about Swami Vivekanda was a renownded scholar and a great philospoher. Swami dayanatha swaraswathy. guru’s like Nataraja guru (Founder of East-West university, and an author of many great philosophical classics.), Sri Narayana guru etc. were world accomplished philosophers.
I havnt heared anything about the above mentioned people being caught for any disparities with what they say and what they does.
Swami’s never posess a religion. Swami is not an astrologer, neednt be a philantroper, not an ecnomist.

its because of these problems Swami Vivekanatha called Kerala a “Bhranthalayam”.
Good article and comments. But I still have trouble with half the respondents as well as the author too. You still seem to easily sway on a blind faith in an imaginary friend on whom you think you know a lot better than the rest cause you think your heart says so and not your mind. What makes you think in the first place that a supposedly ever loving God would expect his children to devote time and energy to pray, praise and profess his so called mercy. Ever wondered to ask yourself, what if I don’t want to be a nagging nuisance to anyone, praying and begging for mercy and forgiveness and rather spend quality time for all the time left.
Simply put. Ignore your imaginary friend and you can easily ignore the intermediates too.
I’m sort of bemused when I ask people, what makes them cling to their faiths and their unanimous boiled down reason is “Purpose of life”.
At first its hard to reason out. But if you close your eyes and ask yourself what the answer is, you would find that you have been knowing this all time through.
Exactly, there is no reason to think of attaching a purpose to life. Good and Bad things are just what they are, “Events” which have no bearing whatsoever and can’t be controlled as well. If you still think God can control events, why doesn’t he shower love on amputees or on the millions who starve.
The point is, if you have the will to see through glass, you would have no reason to ask for reasons from anyone. God is what we call, A sugar-coated candy made by mankind. There is nothing left once you lick it dry. The emptiness left is best to be left unquestioned.
If you still feel a need to berate the argument in equating your personal God with solace. Take my bit of advice. I have seen the kitchen sink thrown at me; Find a life. Break free. Enjoy what nature and humanity has to offer.
@Sanil
I agree with you completely. I dont need a GOD to tell me to love my brothers. I dont need a GOD to prevent me from cheating on my wife. I dont need to be threatened of a punishment in hell, to make me lead a good life. Its really sad to see that people are so dependent on an imaginary thing for everyhting in their life.
What Tony, Sanil and kenny have said is true.
The purpose of religion is to have self discipline. Nothing more nothing less. None of the religious books talk about punishment or about doing bad things to others.
Life is of Choices. You make a decision and you face the consequence. There are no bad decisions in Life; there are only consequences to every decision you make. Today you decide to sleep with some other woman, tomorrow your wife will throw you out of the house. Today you decide to cheat - tomorrow you will loose the trust and respect that people had for you and face chances of going to prison. Consequence of your own actions - not the devil destroying your life or the god showering blessings.
But alas - there are too many week minds in this world who do not know what is what and this is where religious institution - be it the church, the Ammas, the Swamies… take advantage and exploit people.
The basic rule of humanity is Love - as explained in all the religions. Think about it - if you love someone what are the chances that you will do something to hurt them? and what if you loved everybody and every body loved you and everybody loved everybody… am I talking about the impossible…?
All these imaginary things - GOD, Heaven, Hell - are just states of mind. A peaceful mind is in heaven and the person who has a heavy mind is in hell. And God is the answer to the questions that science has not yet been able to answer.
You just have to think for a moment to understand this. But again people have become so narrow minded and selfish that they prefer putting the blame on the gods and the devils - that is a lot more easier than taking the responsibility and facing the consequences of your actions.
Check this out. This has been lying on my phone for a long time. http://www.strippingthegurus.com/
too sordid and lurid for my tastes.
I should know. read my about page to understand why I have such a unique perspective on Godmen/women.
