In some of my posts I have written some things against CUSAT. And with my latest post, some asked me why I hate CUSAT so much. Actually I dont hate CUSAT. I love it very much, after all I hold an engineering degree from CUSAT. How can I hate it.
Here Ill write some of the things I heard about CUSAT before joining CUSAT.
- The only Technology University in Kerala (Very True)
- The only university in Kerala, whose name is known outside Kerala
- CUSAT degree has got more value than any other university in Kerala
- Companies give preference to students with a CUSAT degree
- If you want to study abroad you definitely need a CUSAT degree
- CUSAT Syllabus is the best in India
- CUSAT will soon become an IIT
Now I am not going to comment on any of these, Cos I Love CUSAT.
I graduated with an IT Degree. Here is what I heard in addition:
1. IT department is a research center for DRDO, later realized that its only a division under SOE not even a department and the DRDO contract ended in early 90′s.
2. CUSAT has professors of international repute. Needn’t say that we struggled for even visiting faculty who were just plain B.Tech(s), mostly from CUSAT itself.
Realized many more things yet I do not feel like blaming on to CUSAT but on ourselves. Inspite of thousands of students graduating, we lacked visionaries, lacking Alumni network support and many such things.
Even though we realized the dark side of CUSAT after graduating, what did we do to make things better? We all have some defensive arguments I know, but the fact is that we failed to uplift CUSAT.
However, I’m hopeful after a cycle when we have some students getting disproportionate success, we’ll be able to resolve few things to start with.

Internal changes can be made only by people with power. I am in no power to change the syllabus of the administrative environment there. Me and a few friends of mine organised a barcamp in CUSAT. Also helping out some students with their projects also.

Very interesting, organizing the Barcamp in itself is a commendable task. Din’t know you were behind the effort.
IMO we perhaps needn’t try to change the syllabus at all but supplement the campus culture, help students become visionaries and extraordinarily good at some one thing, technology, problem solving, strategizing etc.
If even half the students can develop constructive thought process and be technically strong, this will automatically bring a positive impact on to the top level.
Perhaps promoting entrepreneurship can bring some positive difference.

hmm well i joind this collg..only becoz of the “valuable” cusat degree..cud hav got much bettr colleges undr othr univrsities.but sadly,i learnt only aftr joining here that recrutrs only cnsdr marks..which i dare say cusat isnt so welknwn of prvidin…anyway when cusat becomes an IIeST all othr colleges undr it except soe..wil be goin undr othr univrsities in kerala

I have never seen more Bullshit. REC-Calicut and CET are the best and prestigious engg colleges in Kerala where hte best and brightest come. CUSAT is 2nd tier Univ.

I agree to displaced’s post above. CUSAT B.tech is 2nd Tier. Only those who do not qualify for Kerala entrance get in CUSAT.
My Kerala engineering entrance rank was 327, and CUSAT rank was ~21 (for ECE).

It is really happy news to both parents, students , teachers and public that name IIT (Kochi) is conferred on CUSAT out of 200 odd colleges selected in the first place !Its very ideally located to benefit students from Kerala and all the southern most parts of the neighbouring state.All the efforts of CUSAT to achieve academic excellence has yielded the results! no body spoke about the school of legal studies and its LLB and LLM courses. why? is this course insignificantly placed as compared to the tech courses. in addition there is this private college called NUALS that has sprung up though with the recognition granted by CUSAT

I am a CUSAT faculty member (Dept of Maths). I found the posts quite interesting although most assume that CUSAT is an engg college. Now the IIEST dream is dead and an IIT looks very unlikely.
In my opinion CUSAT needs a lot of restructuring if it is to improve.
But I think it is not worse than some engg colleges in Kerala which have a better reputation! (I’m talking only about teaching, not placement.)

Duh…..the plain truth…its..wierd…its like “been there..done that”….good memoirs…bad ramifications….studies huh…well ur are on ur own…you study you good…no one to f*&^%n baby feed u…so all those types who need an xtra push all the time..go hunt for Private Colls(M.E.C, Rajagiri and all….)..umpteen chances to write the xams,supplies and all…but results are at THEIR mercy…so fingers crossed while expectin the results…
and……the University boasts ,the only campus to have a BAR and a Gynaecologist inside the Campus…so u know….In Short…Its FUN in ur own limits….

Hiiii,friends.I am going to tell about the big reality of CUSAT.I had got through CAT2010 with rank 502.I took C.S.E. in SOE(maincampus). After taking admn,I reached college on 18july 2010. I was shocked after knowing the reality of CUSAT. CUSAT IS FILLED WITH LOTS OF FATAL PROBLEMS.e.g. cusat hasn’t sufficiet money for its infrastructure.There is partiality btwn northy & southy.Lack of well educated lecturers.they are just btech holder most of them from cusat.They look like HITLER in classes.They often cut attendence if u ask conceptual questns. Becoz, they don’t have deep knowledge about their own single subject. They give only lots of assignments who make students typewriters not scholars.1st year is year wise not semesterwise which is not so in IITs,NITs,EVEN not in OTHER SMALL INSTITUTIONS. Is it a sign of a modern institution?Not at all.Due to this, u have to study 11 subjects during 10 months which becomes difficult in externls exams.In addtion to it,there are Very low marking-scemes in external exams.U will have to spend money on scrutiny. More than 90% stdnts get Suple. Specially the faculty of EC & CS is motherf*cker from 2nd yr. Their syllabii always remain incomplete. They always threaten students (specially northy).These problems are seen & felt often by me.’IT’ branch is supposed to be easiest branch in cusat. Most of students of IT also get suply easily like other branches.Becoz CUSAT earns 2 to 3 crores per annum from supplementry exams as 25 colleges are affliated to it & it earns 250 Rs. from one paper. Cusat gives only 30-39% results per annum.So only few students get placement & cusat says that placement cell has good percentage record.”are madarch*d cusat, jab kam stnds pass karega to plcmnt bhi to kam stdnt lega jisse % record high hoga hi’.Thus cusat hides its reality. There4 each student remains frustrated always. Students show fake to be happy. So stay away from CUSAT (Chutia Uni. Sci. And Tech.). IRAA UNIT & CUSAT play very dirty politics here. I graduated from one of the affiliated colleges in ece.I read all the interesting posts above,let me give my opinion which will help all CUSAT B TECH ASPIRANTS.basically many say that it is difficult to pass in exams ,the thing I under stood is i t is not that much difficult to pass,but VERY DIFFICULT FOR AN AVERAGE STUDENT TO SCORE GOOD MARKS,as a result it is very difficult to score a 75+ perc espicially for ece,THE COMMON MISCONception is that cust students get good percentage value then other students ,for eg for ISRO tests the cut off will be 70+ FOR SHORTLISTING,ALTHOUTH 65 THEY SAY,DURING SHORTLISTING ONLY 1 OR 2 STUDENTS OF OUR CLASS WENT IN TO WRITE EXAMS .THEY HAD ACTUALLY 75 %.the main probleM OF cusat IS THE RESULTS COME TOO SLOW AND THE EXAMS ARE FASTER THAN ANY OTHER UNIVERSITIES GIVING LITTLE TIME TO PREPARE,the main thing is that for keralites i think only students with bad ranks in kerala entrance comes to cusat.
SO MY OPINION IS IF U CHOOSE CUSAT U HAVE TO BE TEDIOUS AND CAREFUL DURING THE 4 YEARS TO GET THE DEGREE IN A FAIRLY GOOD MANNER.(ALSO IF ONCE LOOSE THE GRIP U WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PASS IN 1 CLASS)

It’s really hell. I’m very regretting that Why I didnt take admn in HBIT (KANPUR). In CUSAT, U will only know how to minimise ur supply not abt knowledge n latest technology. I n my lots of frnds always remain frustrated due to dictatorship of faculty n bloody politics of IRAA unit…
I n my lots of frnd will again give AIEEE. Some frnds have already left SOE,Cusat who were intelligent n came here after leaving NIT.
Who told u dat it’s mecca of placements. It’s wrong. My cousin is going to complete 4th yr n he’s 1st topper n have no supply. But still craving 4 placement. Becoz here placement cell is hell… Nobody is happy in cusat, all show that they r happy, but it’s drama.
In northy students..75 to 85% come here by settingggggg… U can know how is cusat so corrupt ?? while in southy, all r booby n lower rankers n baklol(silly). thus maxm boyz have low mentality…… so dont fuck ur bright carrier… I’ll leave cusat in this month like my friends….

usat is a f**king university in all means and most of colleges under cusat is crap, and in my experience TKMIT is the worst.
as the page says, it is true with exams. u write for 90, if u have luck, u ll get 45. and it takes almost 1 year for them to publish result and revaluation of this result takes another 9 months and u get only 1 supply chance in a year. that means, irrespective u pass in revaluation, u already have to write the exam in between of the same paper in advance.
and the worst part is, one will die paying exam fees. they are cheaters and money looters. the exam results of a semester will come only after the last day of same semester’s exam fee last date with superfine, so they will get all the exam fees from those who has slightest of doubt they ll pass or not. in cusat case, if a doubt is there, u can make sure, u wont pass. if u write well also, wont pass, then what to tel about the other situation.
and i have completed course in TKMIT, i go there to apply exam. its a pain-taking process. after all saga, at last you reach office to pay fees, those morons at office keep panchara-adikals and olipikals to female students, like they have not seen females, and we ve to wait for their extracurricular activities to end up and get back after wasting a full day after going to that forbidden hill on the verge of amazon.

Actually my rank was 501 in cat-2010. But I discontinued my course, now I’m preparing for Aieee n left cusat. My 5 frnds has also left college this yr whose ranks were within 600……..
In short, cusat sirf naam pe chal raha hai. Iska naam bihar n u.p. me bahut famous
hai. But reality is not so….
one thing more, more than 80% students are admitted through SETTING process…
North Indian can understand wat is setting…

Usually,a University is evaluated in the number of research publications & number of Ph.Ds produced.In this point of view,CUSAT is first in Kerala and among first 15 in India.Also, 70% of CUSAT faculties are Ph.D holders while there are many Engineering Colleges functioning without a single Ph.D holder.
We are going through commercialization of education and the students & parents expect return(including liberal marks) for the money spent.If you compare CUSAT with new generation Universities and Colleges, you will get disappointed.

CUSAT is state owned University.It is not comparable with Private Universities or Five Star Private Self Financing colleges where the management and faculties stand to please their customers(students & parents) with free marks,liberal exams(open book!) etc because they want to make profit from the educational business.
The Kerala Government /Government of India should provide sufficient fund to provide world class infrastructure to CUSAT.

I am a Third year CIvil Engineering student of SOE CUSAT…. i guess the above “harsh” commentors should have about some “etiquette” before they do comment on a Respectful blog like kenny jacob’s … move on guyss….
I am pretty much sad to see these all bad words about CUSAT. I do strongly agree with Kenny Jacob I LOVE CUSAT… i just want to say that if you study well in the cllege you will get marks else you are going too far my friends…. i dont believe the above commentors who told that CUSAT is blah.. CUSAT is blah blah bad….i really do wanna support Shubham They r just trying 2 defame 1 of the best indian universities….
Almost all the leading faculties are Phd. Holders and they are the best ones available for the teaching… believe me… as faizal said is very much true tht 70% of CUSAT faculties are Ph.D holders while there are many Engineering Colleges functioning without a single Ph.D holder…. the Heads of the divisions are carrying multiple degrees and the knw WTH they are supposed to..
Only problem in the CUSAT is the bad politics only….politics is getting so much dirty here….anyways we can hope for good in future…
Believe me… You are going to get lots of exposure in this College… just the best experience and exposure none of the colleges in the state cant provide with…
