Bribe …..What else can you call this

For this decision to be made, the students had to call a press meet and go on a strike. This is not something new with CUSAT, does it all the time. There is not a single examination with mistakes in question paper, or valuation. This has been happening from the day CUSAT was formed.

The students need not pay fees for revaluation. What a great way to escape from the situation. Poor students will shut up now. But where is the permanent solution. Why cant the the CUSAT staff prepare 10 questions with out mistake. Why are valuation mistakes happening on a large scale ?

Why is CUSAT not conducting an inquiry and take action against those staff who is responsible for this mistake. Atleast can issue a warning. Instead they offer a bribe to the students. What a great way to run a future IIT.

February 28th, 2008 — BarCamp, Education

LiveMint Coverage

Innovation need not be ground breaking

iCamp (23 February, Bangalore): Innovation Camp (iCamp) was held on Saturday in Bangalore. More than 80 people attended the day-long event, which was hosted by MindTree Consulting Ltd. The idea of the camp was to share individual experiences and opinions about innovation in different contexts in the unstructured way that a BarCamp permits.

The talks ranged from the basic “What is innovation?” to ones connecting humanitarianism and spirituality to innovation. A session on innovation in MBA education sparked off discussions on how this idea can be scaled to introduce innovation at all levels of education. While many of the subjects revolved around IT, a number of examples were drawn from non-IT fields as well—not just technology products, but say, traffic jams in Bangalore, and how innovation is needed to address the problem.

Another topic was whether one can be taught to innovate, or a framework be developed in which every person can innovate. Views differed, but everyone agreed that to commercialize innovations, structured processes help. Innovation need not be groundbreaking or disruptive, even finding a shorter route to the office can be called an innovation.

One speaker even innovated with his talk on “Innovative ideas to manage relationships”. He did not have any ideas on the subject, but made use of the collective intelligence of the audience and their experiences to come up with theories.

The day concluded with Knowledge Café, a round table discussion over coffee, jalebis and samosas on “Does process help or hurt innovation?” A majority of the campers felt that process is required, but it should be without restrictions.

Techies contribute to the community by opening up the technology details/code. More and more people use it/contribute to it and improve it. The technology gets better day by day as more and more people start contributing. Check out my view on this concept from by previous post - Standing on Shoulders of Giants.

Now whats there in the management world which is similar. How can management guys learn from the community and contribute to it. What can they contribute which is equivalent to the code contributed by techies. Im not an MBA guy, but Ill try to find some things form my experience with the management guys.

What about market study ? Can we have a repository of market studies like we have code repositories. Will any individual or company share the results of market study ?

How about business plans that have worked and havent worked ? Or are they very secretive in nature ?

Having written all these, now im having a strange feeling. Am I asking a stupid question ?

February 21st, 2008 — Experiences
Yesterday was a Harthal. For my non Indian readers, Ill explain what a harthal is. It is a celebration, with is announced as a surprise mostly by the political parties in India. And this celebration is used as a means to acknowledge all the bad policies of the government by destroying some vehicles and buildings.

For most of the people its a holiday. Families stay at home enjoying the togetherness forced on them. Its an opportunity for the busy working class families to have some time together with their kids and do some homely stuff together.

But with bachelors like us harthals used to be a nightmare because getting food becomes difficult. But with this harthal we found an excellent way to celebrate it. All the good hotels will have their restaurants open. But none will notice that they are open.

So we all went to Swagath for breakfast, Maurya Rajadhani for lunch and Muthoot for dinner. All the three were buffets. We literally turned the boring harthal day into a food festival.
