Honorary Degree for the Techies

Post Page Rank

I hope you have read my post about CUSAT issuing a NFTE (Not Fit for Technical ) certificate to those who are unable to pass all the exams in a fixed time period.

http://www.kenneyjacob.com/2007/10/22/f-the-engineering-education-system/

People like Anoop are a real asset to the society, a true techie in every sense, a senior linux admin at the company he works for. He even has a board that says “Free Wifi Available Here” on the gate of his house.

Its a great Sin to issue him an NFTE certificate just because he cant draw pictures using an equipment that looks like a gun, or he cant get pass marks for a ‘good for nothing’ mathematics 3 paper.

Why cant we give him an “Honorary B-tech”. We give Doctorates to every Tom, Dick and Harry, then why cant we give an Honorary B-tech to people like Anoop.

Sure,Kenney….What is the Need of This Drawings,Physics,Chemistry and Maths for Engg…on the same side look this Tech companies will not look the mark of first years for gaving jobs in there firms….so then what is the use of this type of education..plz tech us on that time C on first sem,c++ on second sem,Java on Third,J2EE on Fourth and Fifth, and plz gave an opertunity for selection sixth, seveth sem as his special interest like

1)System Programming
2)Embedded System Design & Programming
3)Gamming
4)Application Programming

and so on..

by help of this type of Education, they can simply became gud in industry after completing there BE/BTECH…

Engineering system is being run by a bunch of fools now-a-days. And I agree that there are many incidents of justice being denied to students.

But I would like to add something.

Why are we conducting exams? Is it because some bloody fool invented exam system long ago?
No. Actually we dont have ANY other reliable system of assessing quality of knowledge in a person other than exams.
So if somebody wants to prove he is worthy of “Technical eduaction”, the only way is that he should pass the exam. Issuing an NFTE to somebody means that he is not fit for “Tecnical Education” as per the rule o the university.
The guy may be an exceptional genius; but that doesn’t count. You prove that you a genius, and then I will agree that you are a genius. To prove your mettle, you have to pass the standard test. i.e. exam.

I don’t know if I am being misunderstood. I dont want to say that everything is fine in Kerala eduaction system. Actually everything is so wrong.

But giving honorary degree to some arbitrary guy who keeps a board saying “Free Wifi Available Here” is not the solution. Actually, the BTech Degree is not meant to be given to all high-tech people in Kerala. It is not a recognitoin of your services to the society.
A B-tech degree is given to a person who passes the exam, and exam is the standard test used to assess persons perception of the underlyong theory on Engineering.

For exceptional techies, we could arrage some other degree.

I hope I am not giving away a wrong note… :)

@Binu Mathew

I agree with your view that we are not getting enough real life development training from the course.

But there is another fact.
Even though engineering and medicine is being called “professional courses”, they were not meant to be courses enabling graduated do some java development for some multinational.
If any MNC wants a java programmer, let them recruit a fresher out of the college, and train him in java.

Engineering is being misunderstood much these days. Engineering is not software development.
And computer engineering != Software engineering.

Computer engineering is much much more than just software engineering. A computer engineer must be able to engineer new systems for the country and for the society. There is a bit of research involved. And i is meant to be that way.

Engineering is not meant to make some programmer who sits in wipro/infosys and make some crappy software that no-one cares sbout.

Engineering is meant to make people like Larry Page, Sergey Brin etc. - Innovators. but not just that. - Innovators with strong foundation in computer engineering, algorithms, mathematic etc.

CS engineering is also not meant to create physicists and chemists. A lot of irrelevant subjects are being taught in the syllabus.

In the case of mathematics, only a few branches of mathematics are useful to CS students. But the current mathematics syllabus is meant for the civil/mechanical students.

Hi Kenny,

This a very good topic indeed and very relevant in todays world. I actually work in the field of education to a large extent and have spent good no. of itme in this field. To the horror of everyone, its not just the engineering students who need to study and pass these irrelevant subjects but also at primary and secondary school levels that students find this often. Some of the topics are so outdated that they dont make any sense anymore (including solar system where so many new events have happened and schools continue to teach the older version and students are often confused!!). We are fighting a lot of this through a couple of educational NGOs and infact we have removed certain alphabet from Kannada alphabet system which are never used. So may be such a initiative is needed at Eng level also and a movement needs to be done to create awareness among the teaching and practioner community on relevance (rather irrevanlce) of certain topics in todays context and instead introduce certain life skills which are useful for the rest of the student’s life.

This topic needs to be kept alive and debates and the outcome of such debates needs to be published in public forums. Thanks Kenny for starting the topic.

Yes. We are producing a bunch of unemployable engineers. We need to change ourselves. Otherwise, we will lose the battle in long run!

I am also agreeing with you. Actually whats the need of studying these much subjects which are not related with the Engineering branch which we are selected, and is not useful in the future too!!! About this, some one told to me that “an Engineer is supposed to know every subjects.” Actually my branch is Electrical & Electronics. But still I didn’t see any dams or power stations as part of my syllabus. Even I didn’t the chance to check the wiring or get the chance to do the wiring or like that as part of my Engineering syllabus.

And at the same time honorary degree certificate should be given to the Techies, who can’t pass the syllabus based Engineering.
