What I Learned From FOSS.in 2007

FOSS

The event got over today, but the fun continues.

The first thing I learned is that India can be the heaven of Free and Open Source Software. There are too many developers wanting to contribute. And they will if someone shows them how to get started. Then again Evangelisation…

Javascript is going to become the language that dominates light weight application development. XML is here to stay, and is going to be seen in various usage scenarios. I decided to brush up my scripting knowledge.

Got inspired by the mozilla talks and decided to do a do a mozilla application for FastAlerts and Mobshare. This will help the users navigate the user interface better. Also it will help increase the usage.

Wireless Mesh Networks are evolving into a much more reliable and secure technology. In India the adoption rate is very low for community networks (are indians afraid of sharing). Bangalore will soon see its first mesh setup and I am going to be a part of the team.

Many FOSS developers are now focusing on embedded and mobile development. It gives them more freedom and satisfaction. Mobiles are a better playground cos its largely unexplored and it offers much technology freedom than a normal computer. Openmoko, Openembedded, Android, Qtopia etc are going to dominate this.

The future will see more of software than of hardware. GNURadio project aims to make all communication infrastructure to consist of a standard hardware and different software for different applications. Its like you have a device and you can load various softwares to make it act like an FM radio, tv receiver, phone etc. I didnt understand more…. I wish I had taken that Ham License while in college.

And on the final day met up with Rasmus Lerdorf, the guy who created PHP. I had a strange feeling when I met him, felt like I was talking to some film star. He maintains the php.net website and all its subdomains with around 1200 CVS users actively contributing to the project.

Then had chance to see and use the 100$ laptop. Amazing stuff, cleverly designed for kids. Only kids can use it cos its too small for a normal person to use.  Also had a discussion about FOSS and . FOSS fits into my Technology Evangelisation strategy. To tell you the truth, Im technology neutral.

Continuing our debate on Education…

Posted by :- Jyothi M John

I have recently been reading quite a lot of articles pertaining to the mess in which the Indian System is. Last article by Kenny -What Does Engineering Students Need - Evangelisation ?

Not only are the Engineering students affected, this problem of direction less kid’s cut’s across all streams and is because of the flawed system that we have, which gives opportunities to copy machines rather than innovators. Starting from the choice that a kid is given for his carrier -Engineer/Doctor – Is There Another Scenic Route? to the way the marks are compared (Towards a better system of scholastic evaluation) the social pressure on the student to succeed is just too much for them to handle. And just to satisfy the needs of the society students (What I think of Education in India…) everybody involved in this process starts to look for loopholes. Now we have reached a stage were everybody involved in the educational process is exploiting these loopholes to the maximum and blaming each other. But the end product is most of the graduates termed “Unemployable”? or Not fit for technical education.

It is time everyone sat down and rethink/redesign our educational system. It is time we promote Talent, Interest and Creativity and most of all make our students broadminded thinking being’s and not narrow minded robot’s.

Read some of the older articles on here.

What Does Engineering Students Need - Evangelisation ?

I am not talking about the IITs, I am talking about the normal engineering colleges in every state. The ones who are not blessed with tons of funding and very good staff, but blessed with many talented (misplaced) students.

I have seen many students, who has no direction, I myself had the same problem in college. I have (wasted/learned from) a lot of time running after every small technology that caught my interest.  There was  noone to give direction.
You dont need to teach them, you dont need to make them attend a 100 hr training session. You dont need to spend cash on them. All you need to do is to tell them whats cool now and give them something to pursue. The rest they will manage.

Dhaneesh, a student from a an engineering college in Trivandrum also had the same direction problem. He can code really well. But he didnt know what to do with his skills. I met him two days before Android SDK was released. I talked to him about the idea of making a cool app in android platform, and he is now learning the platform and wants to start a company developing applications on the Android platform.

May be this what technology evangelisation is all about. Showing them the opportunity and letting them rise to it.

Here in India there is a huge population to be converted. What do you need for that ? Someone to talk to them about it. Someone to show them the cool things they can do with their skills. We need evangelists.

Many companies have evangelists. But they is no common platform for technology evangelisation. With a combined effort from all the companies we can really convert the students, no matter what the technology is.

Foss.in - Good and Bad Things Happened on Day 1

After 2 hours of traveling on the bike through the most dirty traffic og Bangalore I reached the venue. Thanks to Robin for driving me there. Without his help I would only have reached here by noon.

The place was crowded and there were two long queues at the registration counter. After standing there for 30 minutes I realized the fact that I dont have enough money for completing the registration process. I had to break away from the queue, find an ATM and get money.  Then after registering I was issued a food coupon for the next 5 days.

There is enough security at the entrance and I was throughly checked. They had portable metal detectors. Thanks to the terrorists.

Then I went to the Mozilla room, and attended 2 talks there about developing applications on the mozilla framework. They were really good, and learned about XUL, XPCOM and some other mozilla related stuff. Also got many Mozilla goodies.

Now I was felling very hungry cos I had not eaten anything in the morning. But now I realized the fact that I had lost my food coupon somewhere. I contacted the organizers and they were like “we cant issue more than one coupon to a person”.

Luckily IISC have a decent canteen. The only problem is that you will get only “Pandi” food there. Had some food from there. I was not interested in the after noon sessions so decided to find a place to stay. After some effort found a place 6 kms away from the campus. decent place, 270 per day.

Now Im sleeping peacefully there.
