The monkey is on your head now…

As a manager at my organization - I always face this situation. As a manager you have your own responsibilities, and above it you have to nod and do whatever your Bosses tell you. All this is fine, but the trouble comes with the people assigned to you. Most of the managers face this problem. This concept has been explained in a few book’ - I am just trying it in my way.
You get into your office - everything is going on fine. Suddenly one of your juniors pop’s in and says ” You know what I have a problem with XYZ. I dont know if you can help me…” You reply - “OK - Let me see”

There you go the monkey is on your head now. The job that your employee is supposed to d, is now your responsibility. Now instead of doing your job, you are doing some one else’s job. Now every hour that person drop’s into your office to check if it is done or not. (I thought Managers were supposed to check on the employees)

This end’s up in a stressful situation for the Manager - Doing his job, his junior’s job and whatever extra his boss tells him. If your employee does not know how to do a certain job, you can supervise him when he is doing the job. If he is unable to learn - fire him, he is not good enough. But guess what you just fired a long term headache.

I know it is not easy to get good people. But you know what - it is better to have a trainee who is out to impress you than to have someone, and still end up doing the job yourself.
