Thin Clients or Dumb terminals died out once Novel died - Now everybody wants to use PC’s…But with PC’s the general maintainance of the network goes up - as now the network administrators not only have to look at problem’s on the server but with problems on the PC’s as well. Any technical person will agree with me when I say that 95% of the problems with PC’s have something to do with software (OS/Installation/Drivers/Libraries…)
With a thin client or a dumb terminal you avoid all these problems - as the software on the client is on a ROM - therefore giving the end user no chance of messing around with the settings or the system files. Moreover you can now forget about virus attacks also. the best part is that the amount of power consumed by the thin clients and dumb terminals is way less than what a normal PC would do.
Good thin Clients are still around the Rs.20,000/- mark which does not make them economical in terms of initial investment. The other problem being that though we have quite a lot of MCSE’s and BE’s around us - only a hand full can successfully set up such an environment and maintain it.
