A few days back my friend Sarath was approached by a few medical college students. They all are in the final year and their convocation ceremony is coming up. They wanted us to help them to stream their convocation ceremony to their parents abroad.

We are not streaming experts, but we couldnt turn down their request, after all its a prestige issue. So we started searching for streaming video solutions and we stumbled upon VLC player.

We all were using VLC player to watch videos, its a really good player since it can play corrupted videos without crashing the system. Also you can view finished torrent videos as the download is happening.

The VLC player has got a built in video streaming server. It can stream many formats and can accept video from almost any source. We tested the streaming functionality on our local wifi with a DVD quality stream. It worked perfectly fine.

Now we are waiting for a video camera and a capture card so that we can test the real problem scenario. If that also works fine, we will be streaming the convocation function of Trivandrum medical college – LIVE.
