October 25th, 2007 — Web 2.0, Web 3.0

Semantic web is considered the next big thing on the internet and its also called Web 3.0. Its an extension of the WWW where the web content can be expressed not only in natural language but also in formats that can be read and understood by machines. This will allow better search crawls and organization of information.
Tagging which is an essential part of web 2.0 can be considered as a light weight form of Web 3.0 Tags allows a broad classification of data, and these tags are machine readable also. The number of <em> </em> tags around a keyword emphazies on the importance of that keyword according a parameter that is set by the programmer.

October 25th, 2007 — Web 2.0
This is an sentence that is found in every presentation of Tim O’Reilly (founder of O’Reilly Media and the person who coined the term Web 2.0).
Windows as a platform
Windows became a success because Microsoft opened up its win32 API to developers and developers created millions of applications that required windows to run.
Facebook as a platform
Facebook grew from being ‘just another social network” by opening up developer APIs. Developers can make use of the millions of members in Facebook by using the API.
Amazon Webservices
Amazon has got developer services for on demand storage (S3) and Processing (EC2). Every developer now has got access to an unlimited pool of storage and processing power which he can access by writing 10 lines of code.
As I write this, I am understanding some of my mistakes in approach to various businesses which can be corrected by thinking about a platform instead of an application.

October 24th, 2007 — Education
Computer science and electronics engineering, the modern branches of engineering education are under the control of the older branches like mechanical and civil. In most of the colleges the most under developed branches are these new branches. Some reasons for this are
- Most senior staff are from older branches
- Most principals are from older branches
- Higher number of women staff in newer branches
- More male students in older branches
All of these factors translate to the fact that the control of the college and decision making power lies with these fellows. So at the college level our new branches are helpless.
Even at the university, and AICTE level also this creates problems. The syllabus is controlled by the old generation branches and the new computer science students are forced to learn a lot of useless stuff. Some examples that I had to learn
- Civil Engineering
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Machine Technology
- Engineering graphics (practicals)
- Grinding, cutting, plumbing (lab)
- Mechanical engineering
There are many more examples. These fellows have real strange arguments to include this in the syllabus. “And engineer should know about everything”…. like hell.
A student is not properly introduced to computer science. The syllabus needs a massive change. All these good for nothing subjects should be removed and that time should be alloted to basic stuff like learning to use different operating systems, learning about the internet and different ways to use it.
The bottom line is that 70% of a computer science students time is wasted. We need to change that and the change should start from awareness.
Please check the education category for more stuff.

My Server admin today had a chat with me about a serious issue. CUSAT is planning to issue him a NFT(Not fit for technical education) certificate soon because he could not clear all of his engineering papers. He has got one more year and he is planning to quit his current job and freelancing opportunities get a “good for nothing” CUSAT engineering degree.
I dont know how these idiots in CUSAT determined that my server admin is not fit for technical education. He has an 8 hr day job, where he manages servers which hosts thousands of websites. After that he looks after all of my servers which is the hard part cos we always work on the edge, new stuff always. If he is not fit for technical education no one in India is fit for an education.
I have seen 100s of real idiots possessing a CUSAT degree. Good for nothing people, have no desire to learn anything, do anyhting, all that they want is the pay check and a good sleep. My admin is not like that. If CUSAT issues my admin an NFT, shame on you….. CUSAT.
My admin learned everything on his own. I still remember him buying a RedHat Bible while he was S3, and a legend named “Anoop Alias” was born.
I have a small suggestion for CUSAT, a small change is needed in their NFT certificate.
“CUSAT is not fit for technical education”
