Computer science and electronics engineering, the modern branches of engineering education are under the control of the older branches like mechanical and civil. In most of the colleges the most under developed branches are these new branches. Some reasons for this are
- Most senior staff are from older branches
- Most principals are from older branches
- Higher number of women staff in newer branches
- More male students in older branches
All of these factors translate to the fact that the control of the college and decision making power lies with these fellows. So at the college level our new branches are helpless.
Even at the university, and AICTE level also this creates problems. The syllabus is controlled by the old generation branches and the new computer science students are forced to learn a lot of useless stuff. Some examples that I had to learn
- Civil Engineering
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Machine Technology
- Engineering graphics (practicals)
- Grinding, cutting, plumbing (lab)
- Mechanical engineering
There are many more examples. These fellows have real strange arguments to include this in the syllabus. “And engineer should know about everything”…. like hell.
A student is not properly introduced to computer science. The syllabus needs a massive change. All these good for nothing subjects should be removed and that time should be alloted to basic stuff like learning to use different operating systems, learning about the internet and different ways to use it.
The bottom line is that 70% of a computer science students time is wasted. We need to change that and the change should start from awareness.
Please check the education category for more stuff.
