freifunk.net is a noncommercial initiative, started in 2003 and run by a
growing number of volunteers. The idea is to spread knowledge about
building free/open wireless community networks in collaboration with
existing groups and organisations.
Friefunk firmware is based on openwrt, which is a free open source linux operating system for routers. The most commonly used router is the Linksys WRT54GL series. This router can be easily re-flashed with the friefunk firmware using the firmware GUI itself.
Friefunk uses a routing protocol named the OLSR (Optimized link state routing protocol). Its a routing protocol thats optimized for mobile ad-hoc networks.
