    Friefunk logo

freifunk.net is a noncommercial initiative, started in 2003 and run by a
growing number of volunteers. The idea is to spread knowledge about
building free/open wireless community networks in collaboration with
    existing groups and organisations.

Friefunk firmware is based on openwrt, which is a free open source linux operating system for routers. The most commonly used router is the Linksys WRT54GL series. This router can be easily re-flashed with the friefunk firmware using the firmware GUI itself.

Friefunk uses a routing protocol named the OLSR (Optimized link state routing protocol). Its a routing protocol thats optimized for mobile ad-hoc networks.

    1. Great site. I also liked the report on Freifunk.net, we are actually working with one of the founders Juergen Neumann.

Please note you spelled Friefunk the correct spelling is Freifunk…

You can get more info here our work to set up process to assemble and distribute OpenHardware Routers:
